Introduction: Help Creating a Profile

This page is intended as a help for anyone wanting to create error-free profiles. If you are new to genealogy or to WikiTree, then you should begin with New Member How-to pages. Data Doctors “clean up” the database in WikiTree by correcting profile errors and suggestions. This page is maintained by the Data Doctors Project, and expands upon the initial concepts in the new member pages.

Data Doctors Suggestions

The Data Doctors have provided a list of helpful templates that, when used correctly, should create accurate, suggestion free profiles. We sorted these template examples by the most often used biography sections. Copy and paste a sample, then replace the sample data with yours. Click the preview button below the edit box to see what it looks like.

Everyone can find the Suggestions for the WikiTree profiles that are on their Watch List, by selecting Suggestions under the MyWikiTree pull down menu. These are updated weekly, usually on Monday or Tuesday. It is a good idea to review them frequently. Any questions, should be posted to G2G with a tag for Data Doctors.

Adding Sources

To place a citation inline next to the information it links to
  1. Copy your citation,
  2. Place cursor at end of text referred to
  3. Click the C cite your source found above the edit box. This generates a set of open and closed ref tags with the words Insert reference here between them.
  4. Click the words Insert reference here once or highlight text and then click paste to overwrite them
  5. While this appears on the edit page as a large amount of text, once saved, in the profile view only a [1] will be shown, but under sources heading, the full citation is seen
  6. In order to use same source again, name the first, open, ref tag in a way that indicates its data. So for a census record used more than once, name <ref> something like <ref name=1881_Census>. Copy the <ref name=1881_Census>, paste it at end of second fact you wish it to link to and edit it to <ref name=1881_Census /> by adding a space then a /. The citation in text will still show as [1]. However in the source section it will now appear as 1,1.1.

  • Help page on creating "Links to FindAGrave" using {{FindAGrave|12345}} template. Remember that the Source Citation at the bottom of the Find A Grave page is preferred to be included in the profiles, not the Family Search or Ancestry information.

Use '|sameas=no' if there is no memorial belonging to the profiled person on the page. If there is, no matter how many other Find A Grave links are there, the proper one is recognized by WikiTree+ and the others are ignored. For example, if there is a son with a link to his father's memorial, but not to his own, then sameas=no is used. If the son has a memorial as well, mark it sameas=yes and sameas=no is not needed on the father's memorial.

Use '|sameas=yes' if the profile doesn't have enough data that matches the memorial, but the memorial does belong to the profiled person. Note: Other suggestions based on name or date differences might be generated.
(When in doubt, always mark the memorial matching the profile with a "sameas=yes" and mark the ones that don't match the profile with a "sameas=no" if there is no "sameas=yes" used anywhere in the profile. "note added by Steven Tibbetts")
This section is not required but, when used, goes above Sources heading.
