Biography

I am a retired high school Applied Technology teacher and Technology Coordinator. Also a veteran of the U.S. Army Signal Corps, I have been a community newspaper publisher, prize-winning newsletter editor, water gardener, Ham radio operator, and secretary and newsletter editor for my local gun club. I publish a private weekly newsletter on topics related to firearms and Second Amendment issues.

I turn to Genealogy, shooting, RV travel, Ham radio, home repair, and other hobbies to keep me grounded. I was a certified Rangemaster/Range Safety Officer and taught Archery and BB Guns at Scout day camps. I am also an NRA-certified Range Safety Officer and Home Firearms Safety Instructor and can set up and manage any type of firing range. I informally teach individuals and small groups about firearms and their safe use.

My father was in the US Navy during World War II and came home to Colorado to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder. He and my mother were married shortly before he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. In the late 1940's, foreign jobs paid well, so he took a job with American Smelting and Refining Co. (ASARCO) in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. I was born in El Paso, Texas while he was training for his job.

We lived in San Luis Potosi a few years, during which time my Mother returned to Colorado and filed for divorce. After the divorce, my Dad was promoted to Plant Engineer at the ASARCO smelter in Denver, Colorado, his home town. I grew up in Aurora, a suburb east of Denver, and live there today.

I got my start in Genealogy asking questions about my mother. I loved my stepmother dearly, but still needed something more. After my Dad passed away in 1994 and my stepmother moved to Texas to be with her sister, my research shifted into high gear. I found notes from a cousin in my Dad's papers, and soon had everything I needed to start researching my paternal lines, which really wasn't much.

Computers were just coming into widespread use in Genealogy, and I was still searching for my birth mother and my maternal line. I always joked that I didn't celebrate St. Patrick's day because I was German, but after I re-located her in 2005, I found a rich trove of ancestors all over Europe (including Ireland) and tons of settlers of Colonial America.

I have discovered royal ancestors in nearly every region or country in Europe, from Spain to Russia, including the United Kingdom and Scandinavia.. I also discovered kings and queens, archbishops and saints, witches in Salem, Knights Templar, and a host of other people who have made important contributions around the world.

As I was working on my lines, my wife began asking about her lineage. More and more records were showing up on computer by this time, and our research uncovered several cross-over ancestors, especially royalty in Scotland and France. Where my ancestors originally settled in New England and moved West, hers settled in the South. I have determined she and I are cousins way back, with both our Scottish lines tracing to Freskin de Moravia, progenitor of several Clans, including Clan Murray, the Clan we actively assist.

Before changing my major in college so I could teach, I had been a History and Political Science major and, to this day, I find myself going off on tangents as I'm working. At times, I'm finding the historical times of my ancestors are far more interesting than my ancestors themselves.

Some Genealogists ("Sourcerers") start with their own family group and work out from there, collecting source material and family stories they can share with other family members. Since I don't have a family interested in sharing their stories and anecdotes, I am more of a "Collector," trying to expand my research as far as I can through the various generations. When I hit a brick wall or item of particular historical interest, I backtrack and try to put my ancestors into the picture. Although I don't have a lot of "family lore" or anecdotal information to share, I always have plenty of material to draw from.

A full record of my research can be found online at my personal website: [12] OR [13]. Send me a note if you have any questions. I also have family trees on Ancestry.com [14] (contact: michaelthomas127) and MyHeritage.com [15].

Hi Michael!

Thanks for your contributions to Puritan Great Migration (PGM) project profiles.

Like all WikiTree projects we check in with team members periodically to find out about their continued interest in the project. Would you please respond by February 5, 2024, to let us know about your interest:

  1. Would you like to continue as a PGM project team member?;
  2. Do you have any suggestions for PGM Project priorities in the next year (optional)?;
  3. Do you have interest in taking a more active role within the PGM project, and if so, what you might be interested in doing (optional)?

Please respond to this comment on your profile, or if you'd like, send a private message to either Bobbie (Madison) Hall or S (Hill) Willson.

Thanks for all you do for PGM and WikiTree!

Regards,

Bobbie and Sharon, Co-Leaders, Puritan Great Migration Project

I would like to continue with the project. Due to health concerns, I haven't done as much as I would like, but my list of PGMs is getting longer.

I'm following the project online. I think priorities are fine as they are. Too many of the projects seem to be taking on more and more tasks and expanding to the point (with the accompanying requirements for members) that it becomes WORK instead of an enjoyable pursuit.

posted by Michael Thomas
Thanks for your speedy response, Michael. I hope your health issues are resolved soon. We're content with any contributions you are able to add, and appreciate all your work. I'm always happy to see your work on the ENEF profiles, as those have so much quality information.

I agree on the problem of expansion in Project work. We're actively trying to put the focus on the adult immigrants (you've no doubt seen the Minor Child category being added to the children), and try to keep members working on the development of these as a primary job. If loads of new members become interested, we can *always* find things for them to do for the Project.

Again, thanks for all you do!

On behalf of the Scotland Project, I would like to thank you for your commitment to the project's goals. Every single contribution you make helps improve Scottish profiles!

Sheena - Scotland Project Membership Coordinator

Sheena,

I would like to continue as I have been. I am slowly adding Murrays to the One-Name Study, and working on other issues that arise - merges, profile cleanup/editing, etc. Haven't done as much this Summer as I would have liked, but will pick up the activity as the weather changes into Fall and Winter. The Clan Murray AGM over Labor Day Weekend will also create some tasks for me to complete. I am also working with the Scottish-American Military Society (SAMS) at the National level, and will be doing more for them, as well.

  • If you are happy with the team you’re on or if you’d like to make a change. It is now required that all members with an Ireland project badge work on at least one of the project’s team(s), so if you’ve not yet signed up please do so in your reply to this check-in.
  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, Just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the Ireland Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely, Jen Hutton, on behalf of the Ireland Project

Hi! The template for the Colorado Sticker was recently changed (default text is now "was a Coloradan" - living=y still works for changing "was" to "is"). If you would like to edit the default text, it now has that capability. See Template: Colorado Sticker for details. No need to do anything if you're ok with the sticker's text being "Michael Thomas is a Coloradan".

Cheers, Liz

P.S. The Texas Sticker was updated in 2020.

Hi Michael!

It's time for our annual Scotland Project check-in!

This year we are hoping to learn what our membership would like to accomplish over the next 12 months. In case you aren't aware, this year is WikiTree's ""Year of Connections"" and the Project's leadership would like to contribute to this in as many ways as possible.

We would appreciate it if you would share your thoughts and ideas with us on how we can accomplish this goal. We would also appreciate it if you would provide some feedback on our existing goals, including:

  • If you have not yet signed up to help on one of the project's teams, which team(s) would you be interested in joining?
  • How often should we provide a Project Newsletter?
  • Have you participated in the Tartan Trail? If not, is this something you'd be interested in doing?
  • Do you have a question(s) that we could add to a Frequently Asked Questions page?
  • Any suggestions or ideas you have on ways to improve the Scotland Project in general

We continue to communicate with our Project members via Google Group (official) and Discord (unofficial), as well as G2G. You may also reach out to any of the Project leaders via WikiTree's internal messaging system at any time.

Thank you for all you do to help the Scotland Project become a knowledge hub for Scottish genealogical research! We wish you all the best in 2022!

Sincerely, Amy Gilpin on behalf of the Scotland Project Leaders

Hi Michael!

Thanks for contributing to Puritan Great Migration profiles over the last six months. Every little bit helps, so please keep those edits coming!

Like all WikiTree projects we check in with team members twice per year and it's that time again. Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  1. If you'd like to continue as a PGM project team member
  2. If you're happy with the team you're on (Research and/or Profile Improvement) or if you'd like to make a change
  3. Optionally, what you like since the reboot back in May or what you think could be improved. This could be something about Discord, or Google Groups, or managed profile spreadsheets, or challenge participation or really anything. If you like everything the way it is, you can let me know that too :)

If you'd like to tell me about a particular project or family you're working on, I'd love to hear about that as well.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. I look forward to hearing from you.

Many thanks!

Hi,

The Germany Project Leaders are doing their semi-annual check-in with all project members and we want to verify that you’re still interested in being a member of the Project. Please respond by private message and let me know.

Are you currently working with one of our Sub-projects or Teams? If not, take a look at our main Project page for a full list.

We really appreciate your contributions on WikiTree, and thank you for all your hard work. If you have any questions, please ask. We would also love to hear any feedback you may have for the project.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

I'd like to renew with the Germany Project. I seem to be lighting on Profile Improvement Teams on most of my other projects, so if you would like to put me there, that's fine. I was able to resurrect a little information from a hard drive I thought I had lost a few years ago, so may be able to add some information. Thanks for the contact.

Hello,

I am checking in on behalf of the 1776 Project to announce the new project membership requirements and to verify that you are still interested in being a member of the project. All project members are being asked to join one of the project teams and also to make at least one project contribution every 6 months. We are also asking all project members to join the project's Google Group for project communications.

If you are interested in remaining with the Project, please reply to this comment or send me a message, request to join the Google Group, and let us know what team you would like to participate on.

We really appreciate your contributions on WikiTree, and thank you for all your hard work. If you have any questions, please ask. We would also love to hear any feedback you may have for the project.

If we don't hear back from you we will assume that you no longer wish to participate in the project and if so, you could rejoin at any time as is convenient for you.

We look forward to hearing from you soon!

I'd like to remain with the Project, but don't have the time to help a team in a worthwhile way. I've enjoyed my work with the Project, and wish you only the best.

The minimum requirement is one contribution every 6 months and/or to merely answer the check in post (that you have done by replying to my message above). Part of the addition of the teams is administrative: the Team Leaders will help to disseminate information and will aid in the check in posts next year. If all goes according to plan, you'll hear from a Team Leader next year.

Almost everyone does biography improvements while doing Wikitree work; I'll add you to the bio improvement team and you can always change to a different time at a later time if you're interests and time available changes.

Please let us know if you need anything and thanks for your participation.

best,

SJ

Thanks, that will be fine. I'm finding with the new direction a lot of the projects on Wikitree seem to be taking, it's becoming a task for the people who seem to work full-time on the site. I just can't put that much time in, though I do have over 100 PGMs to work with.

Thanks, again, Mike

Hello

It’s time for a Project check-in!

Scotland Project Leaders check in with you at least once a year to see how you are doing. With the changes happening around the world, we understand that life is hectic right now.

What are you planning to work on for the Scotland Project this year? Are you happy with the team(s) you part of, or would you like to make some changes?

This time round, we’re also looking for feedback on the use of Google Group and Discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way to ensure you receive Project communications? If you would like to join us on Google Group or Discord, let us know in your response.

I am satisfied with where I am and what I am doing, if that's OK. I prefer Google Groups over Discord. Discord is too much like social media and can end up a time consuming effort to follow the threads.

Michael,

I'm interested in the Bavaria Team and I noticed that you're listed as the team leader. I've been researching the Yanker family, who came to Arkansas from the Waldkirchen area in 1881. I've traced ancestors (Janker, Jäncker, Jänckher) through the Passau Catholic archives (matricula-online.eu) back to the late 1600s and I'd be happy to contribute and share what I've learned if this would be useful to the team.

Most of my research has been done through baptism, marriage, and death registers, so I don't have a lot of context beyond dates and names, and because of that, I'd be very interested in learning more about the history of that region between 1650-1880s to expand my knowledge of what life might have been like during that time and to help understand what might have caused them to move around and eventually leave the area in 1881.

Mark, I don't see your name on the list of team members, but from what you've said here, I certainly think you should be a member of the team.

I don't have any special resources beyond what you see on the Bavaria page. If you find different places to look, be sure to add them to the categories.

The main task is probably creating profiles of your Bavarian ancestors, if you haven't done so already. Getting profiles on the site that can be seen by others is the best way to find others with similar ancestors and interests. Good Luck!

Hi Michael,

As you may have seen, we have been doing some restructuring in the US Southern Colonies Project and are now organising ourselves into different teams. We have also changed the criteria for membership. Please have a look at the new project pages, and let me know whether you would like to remain in the project and, if so, which team(s) you would like to be in.

Please can you also send me your e-mail address. I can then make sure you are introduced to your Team Leaders and are in the Google Group.

Please note that it is a requirement for membership in the US Southern Colonies Project that you respond to these check-ins. We’re really excited for the future of the project and hope that you decide to be a part of it with us moving forwards.

Many thanks,

Hello,

As one of the co-leaders of the European Aristocrats project, I'm messaging to inform you that we are removing the "House Assignments" from our project structure. You are absolutely still welcome to work on the profiles from the families that you chose, we are simply removing the official House Assignments as, for the most part, people choose to work on whichever profiles interest them. We're glad to have you in the project and we hope that you continue to work with us!
