Biography

In his addendum to the Van Rensselaer Bowier Manuscripts summarizing information on the "Settlers of Rensselaerwyck, 1630-1658," Van Laer wrote of "Cornelis Hendricksz van Nes (van Es)" that he was in the colony of Rensselaerswyck in 1641. Van Laer inferred that he probably accompanied Andries de Vos to New Netherland on den Eyckenboom, departing from Amsterdam on May 17, 1641, and arriving at New Amsterdam in August 1641. According to Van Laer:

From 1642, he is charged with tithes of a farm at Bethlehem, which he seems to have occupied till the fall of 1648, when van Slichtenhorst brought actions against him for calling him a liar and a cheat and for throwing oat straw on the dump heap out of spite against the director and to the detriment of the next lessee. In April 1649, he made preparations to leave the colony, but for some reason stayed and Aug. 25, 1650, he leased, for eight years at f225 a year, a farm in Greenbush, formerly occupied by Teunis Cornelisz van Vechten, together with six morgens of land belonging to the adjoining farm of Teunis Dircksz van Vechten. Van Nes served as raets persoon (councilor) of Rensselaerswyck, at an annual salary of f50, from 1652 to 1658, and again in 1660, 1661 and 1663. He lived with his wife Maijgen Hendricksen, at Vianen, province of South Holland, in 1625, and owned land at Scherperswyck, near Leksmond, in the neighborhood of Vianen, as late as 1661."[1]

Note: The three morgens of land at Scherperswyck, while jointly owned while they were married, was property inherited by his wife Mayke from her mother, Anneke Jansdr, and would be passed on to her children directly after her death.[2]

Cornelis Van Ness was born 1599/1600. Was of Vianen Holland. He emigrated to Rensselaerswyck, New Netherland, in 1641. He was alive in 12 Nov. 1684. In 1664 he married as a second wife Marritje Damen, widow of Dirk VanEpps and widow of Hendrick Andriessen VanDoesburg.[3]

In March 1663, Cornelis van Es paid for the use of a large pall.[4] It is likely that this was for the interment of his first wife, Maijgen.

Upon his re-marriage 21 March 1664 he, as a member of the Council of Rensselaerswyck, secured for the children of his first wife, Mayeke Hendricx van den Burghgraeff, vizt. Gerrtie Cornelis wife of Reolof Cornelissen, Hendricke Cornelis wife of Jan Janzen van Oothout, Hendrick, Gerrit, Jan, Grietie Cornelis wife of Peter Claessen of Amersfoort, their mother's property. Nes-1 and Van Nes-28 do not represent the same person because: Different death dates that are quite far apart and different spouse when married in 1624 and one in 1625. More research needs to be done on this profile before they can be merged.

This problem seems impossible for me to fix because earlier posters have confused two Cornelis Van Nesses. And given one the correct wives but the wrong mother. And given the other the right mother but the wrong wife. Is there anyone out there who is able to fix this?

It would help if someone who is "qualified" could please remove Anneke Wessels (Wessels-47) as the mother of Cornelis? The Anneke Wessels who married a man with the same name as Cornelis's father married him in 1654, 54 years after Cornelis's birth and probably long after Cornelis's real father's death. See this marriage: Hendrick Gerritszen Van Nes in Embderlandt, en Anneken Wessels Van Colen. (banns: 19 April 1654 NYC Ref Ch, she was dau. of (poss) Wessel Warners.

It is annoying to have this person remain in this record as Cornelis's mother.

Nes-1 and Van Nes-28 appear to represent the same person because: They are the same person. Van_Nes-28 has his correct two wives: Maycke (Hendricksdr) van den Burchgraeff 1602-1664 and Marriten Damen abt. 1611-1698. Nes-1 has an incorrect wife, she was not Trentje Jacobse, otherwise they are the same person. One other error is that Anneke Wessels is NOT Cornelis' mother, so in this one detail Nes-1 is correct in its identification of the parents of Cornelis.

I added some information about Cornelis van Nes and his wife Maeyken from the Archive of Lakerveld (from the National Archives in The Hague), the hometown of Maeyken, 1624-1628.

Last week I went over the Minute Book of Notary Rudolph van Suylen van den Natewis in the archives of Vianen in Wijk bij Duurstede,, Netherlands (as my ancestor is from there around that time).

Besides the common testament of Cornelis Henricksen van Nes and Maychgen Hendriks in July 31 1625 (page 21), Cornelis is mentioned in the same minute book on August 6 1625 as witness, together with his brother Helmich Hendriks van Nes, to the testament of Henrick Reijers and Jenneken Dirks, also living on the Havendijk.(page 22). Then again on April 8 1629 three deeds about the purchase of a house in Nijpoort, Holland, by the Claes Hendriksz van Nes, together with Helmich Hendriksz van Nes, Cornelis Hendriksz van Nes, authorised by Gerrit Henricsz van Nes and with Harmen Hendriksz as husband and guardian of Geertruyt Hendriks van Nes. The deeds contain the signatures of the actors. All these on pages 29, 30v and 31v. I made a copy of the page mentioning the names and of the page containing the signatures. The deeds are made again in the house of Cornelis Hendriksz van Nes on the Havendijk, just outside the town Vianen. One of the witnesses is the same one as in the testament of Cornelis and Maychgen in 1625. As I have no way to add this information to the profile of Cornelis Hendriksz van Nes, i am informing you in this way, as I have made a transcript and translation of the testament in 1625 and copies of the main pages from 1629. My ancestor Cornelis Hendriksz Duycker / van Achthoven was also living there nearby in Helsdingen, land of Vianen, from 1593 until 1621, so a contemporary. The mentioned Nijpoort in Holland, must be the present town of Nieuwpoort, also located on the Lek like Vianen.

Thank you for this excellent information, Frans. Your information tells more about the family of this man and his life before emigrating. I see that Cornelis had brother Helmich. I think that Claes and Gerrit also were brothers, and Geertruyt likely was their younger sister. I find it particularly interesting that your ancestor may have been acquainted with this couple who emigrated to New Netherland.

I do not understand why you said you cannot add information to this profile. Any pre-1700-certifed member should be able to add to the text section (project-protection does not prevent that), and I believe you should be able to upload images of the records you examined. Did the system prevent you from editing?

Project-protection does, however, restrict the ability to add the siblings to Wikitree. Several of us do have the necessary access, though, so we can add them once we decide who is appropriate to add and what should be assumed about their life dates.

As to making text changes, I can definitely see how it would be daunting to try to edit this profile. The Acknowledgments list shows that at least 19 people created duplicate versions of this profile, including numerous problematic source citations. Introducing new content into the resulting merged profile could feel like venturing into a den of snakes!

If you are unable to upload the document image(s) to this profile, you can upload your image(s) anywhere in WikiTree and provide a link to the image page(s), and we can get them added to this profile.  :-)

Cornelis Van Ness

Cornelis Van Ness was born in Holland about 1630. He emigrated to New Netherland about 1641.

He appears to have married twice. In April 1654, he wed Anneke Wessels in New Amsterdam. In 1664, he married a widow born Marite Damens. That marriage produced seven children. An affidavit dated November 1665 identified him as her husband and guardian. In 1670, Maritie was able to take possession of her land at Canestagione.

Traditional sources tell us he was a brewer who had a house in Beverwyck and a house, lot, and brewery in Greenbush and that he died in New Jersey in 1679 or about 1682.

However, in 1697, the home of a Cornelis Van Ness in the Manor housed two men.

In any event, the name of this Cornelis Van Ness dropped from Albany area rolls by the end of the century.

notes Sources: The life of Cornelis Van Ness is CAP biography number 887. This sketch is derived chiefly from family and community-based resources. We seek more definitive information on his origins and passing.

The name van Nes probably doesn't have to do anything with the places named Nes in Ameland or Friesland , but is referring to de Nes in the area of Lexmond . I have been looking at some transcripts of the Rechterlijke archieven (Court minutes) of Lexmond and there, in an inheritance, are parcels of land and a house lying (or situated) in de Nes, mentioned. So it might have been a hamlet or something or a specific area, but it probably is referring to this de Nes mentioned in the court minutes of Lexmond and located in the area of Lexmond .

I am fairly new to Wikitree. Cornelis is my ancestor and I have visited Vianen, as well as Lexmond and Lakerveld and Noordeloos. My husband and I asked directions and even found Scharperswyck, which is off the main road and now a nature preserve! I have also made an online friendship with Teus Burggraaf, who is the originator of the website https://genealogieburggraaf.nl. And I posted the map specifically to illustrate that no, he was NOT from Friesland, where spurious genealogists located the place called "Nes" on the island of Ameland and without any evidence assigned it to him. The map I posted shows all the places listed above, including Scharperswyck, and in particular shows the area "De Nes" which is "just off the dike," which is its meaning. This is where the family had their farm, and were neighbors of the Burghgraeffs. I'd love to remove all the places in Wikitree where the island of Ameland has been assigned to various Van Ness and Van Neste profiles. And I'm glad to see the contributions here of Frans van Agthoven, it's important to have a contributor who speaks Dutch!

Assumptions without documentation--Cornelis Hendricksz van NES originates form town of NEs (one of three poss. in Netherland_ Hendrick Gerritszen van ES in Emberlandt marr. 19 Apr. 1654 -That is town of Esens in Emberland meaning East Frisia which is not in Netherland, Hendrick would have to be ab. 80 years old in 1654 if he were father of Cornelis. Children of Cornelis are rec. as Gerritie,Hendrickie,Hendrick,Gerrit and Jan. and Grietie--There are no Simon, Aeltje,Adriaen, Evert or Cornelis. Cornelis did not die in Fairfield not in 1681 (he is recorded alive in early records of Albany p. 278) or in 1684. There is no documented death date, but likely 1684 before 1686/7

Cornelis has no doc. birth/place. He was from Nes, and he lived in 1625 in Vianen in the street called"Havendyck"
