List of bot actions

Permanent actions:

  • Deletion, renaming and merging of categories. For now it runs manually on a daily basis. More about this on Category:EditBOT.
  • Template redirects. For now it runs manually on a daily basis after import of templates dump. If one of the redirected template is used, profile is corrected to directly use the correct template. That makes template maintenance easier.
  • Categories corrections. For now it runs manually on a daily basis after import of categories dump. This reduces the creation of new duplicated categories.
    • Wanted categories are checked if there exists a category with same name and different case. If it does, all profiles, subcategories and links to it are corrected to use existing category.
    • Wanted categories are checked if there exists a category with same name but different separators placing. If it does, all profiles, subcategories and links to it are corrected to use existing category.
    • Wanted categories are checked if the category was already renamed by the bot. If it was, all profiles, subcategories and links to it are corrected to use renamed category.

  • Deletion of empty misnamed categories
  • Correction of UTF errors in biography, that prevented display of biography on the profile. (6000 profiles, half corrected, others will be next week)

Would you please correct the categories for Kilpatrick-1322, Finch-4586 and Finch-4708. I placed Tioga County in them and then remembered they did not belong there.

Thank you for your wonderful work correcting our mistakes.

I don't know who set EditBot up to change the Category "Cedar Hill Cemetery and Mausoleum, Newburgh, New York", a correct category name, to "Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh (town), New York."

Note that the cemetery's name for itself includes "and Mausoleum" - their link:

Furthermore (town) is highly irregular, and not generally included in category names. (The other cemeteries in that same down don't have it.)

Why change category DoudaLine2 to Gerard-337DoudaLine2. Makes no sense why my user-id is in a category. Seems some communication is needed before changing categories like these.

Well I see I that the ol'EditBot messed with more categories than just mine ... messed a few of them up and now I have people telling me to fix my categories. They were fine before EditBot "fixed" them!

Eddie, much thanks for your correction on The Great War (it's a New Zealand thing). I knew if I got it in the ballpark, you would make all nice.

Thanks little dude!

I see the category "Battalion of Upper Canada" in the War of 1812, now seems to be two. One now adding "Niagara". A bit of a shock when my old bookmark did not work. (Quickly did a search for a less common name, and was relieved hours of work had not disappeared.) Interesting to have that separation. In part because all of the scattered units were formed into a single battalion in March 1814. The Niagara category does seem to include units from York and Norfolk, which did see service on the Peninsula. Thus, I see the logic. I guess it might help as a single category might be unwieldy.

Dear EditBot,

thank you for your good work. However, you have made a mistake. There are at least two villages called Heimersheim in Germany. The one in which several of my forefathers were born is near Alzey, and since 1972 is a part of the city of Alzey, in Kreis Alzey-Worms, Rheinland-Pfalz. You mistakenly changed the Kreis from Alzey-Worms to Category: Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, Rheinland-PfalzCategory: Ahrweiler (Kreis), Rheinland-Pfalz. I have changed it back to Alzey.

Hello EditBot,

I appreciate you cleaning up the various creative ways that I and others are writing our Find A Grave links.

I had an efficiency idea to reduce the number of goof-up that lazy sloppy persons such as moi are making.

Could you consider pulling some strings to get a proper template example for a FAG link added on the right hand side of the Profile Editing Pages?

I see there really is space for such an model link in the "Formatting Tips" area. I bet this would be one of the most heavily used "Formatting Tips" if the template were there where people like me could just nab it.

And thank you for all your work, I see it is not without controversy. This is all a work in progress. We learn as we go.

Kindest regards to the bot that never sleeps.

Your change are historically incorrect and I wish you would s t o p. The Ardennes-Alsace Campaign is the official name that includes the battle which US newspaper daubed the Battle of the Bulge only one of a number of battles fought during that Campaign. The Ardennes refer to the battles fought in Belgium & Luxembourg, the Alsace refers to those fought in southeastern France, I have found consistent inaccuracies by EditBot in my WWI and Civil War profiles also.

Unfortunately, the "bad" renames that EditBot may occasionnally perform are the fault of such "categorists" as me, when we make a human error trying to fix a category name that looks bad. EditBot is only doing what it is told :-)

Categorization project usually goes out of its way to coordinate with other projects. This was the error of an over-enthusiastic, faillible human being :-)

You need to talk to me before you go changing anymore of the cemetery locations in Mississippi. I am the MS cemetery project coordinator & I don't agree with what your editbots are doing without coordinating changes with the ones that created them. You don't know where these cemeteries are located. Some that has the town name plus the county name are NOT in the town. In the case of McNair Cemetery, Mount Olive, Covington County, Mississippi. This cemetery has a Mt Olive address but is NOT in the city limits. When the cemetery project first started there were no hard & fast rules for the naming conventions. So I was using the location as what Findagrave used. Many location names are communities & sure can be repeated within the state, so leaving out the county name can cause confusion.
