The Wobschall surname has its origins in Prussia and what is now northern Germany near Berlin. The surname meaning may be “weaver of shawls (or scarves)”. Modern spellings include at least all of the following: Wabschall, Wabshall, Wabshaw, Wapschall, Wapshall, Wobschal, Wobschall, Wobshall, Wopschall, Wopshall, Wubshaw.
The custom in Prussia was for the oldest son to inherit the farm and that area of Prussia became so crowded that other family members left for better opportunity. My line traces back to around 1800 when Germans migrated to near Posen Poland. They likely farmed potatoes.
The Germanic villages in Posen kept their language and Protestant religion while their neighboring villages spoke Polish and were Catholic. As with many areas of the world, this region changed multiple times due to wars. The final major change was after WWII when German people were exiled from Poland. Most returned to northern Germany but a few remained in Poland. German cemeteries and many vital records were destroyed thus making research difficult.
The largest concentration of Wobschalls live in Minnesota while others live in Wisconsin, California and Ohio. All are related although many of these connections are not verified.
My relatives immigrated to near Berlin, Wisconsin and Toledo, Ohio. They traveled by train to visit each other.
All Wopshalls known to me are descended from my grandfather. His father and siblings had the Wapshall surname. My great-grandfather was born a Wobschall about 1820 near Gniezno Poland and remained there. My grandfather came to the United States in 1869 and his naturalization document shows him as a Hoopshaw.
Unless a Wopshall male child is born in the next few years, my surname will cease to go forward.
