The only known oil painting of Jim Bowie done from life c. 1820 was purchased for the State of Texas at auction on June 26, 2001. The book Louisiana Portraits attributes the painting to American artist George Peter Alexander Healy. However, in an 1889 letter by then owner John Moore, he stated, "Photograph of Col. Jas. Bowie taken from his portrait painting by West." Although he does not indicate West's first name, this probably would be William Edward West (1788-1857) who is known to have painted a few portraits in New Orleans in 1818. A copy of this portrait hangs on the south wall of the Texas Capitol House of Representatives Chamber. It was painted in 1894 by Mamie Cardwell when the original portrait was the property of Jim Bowie's grand-nephew Major John S. Moore of New Orleans. This image is taken from the copy at the Texas Capitol House of Representatives Chamber
