These models have a distinctly folksy style and execution. One characteristic that seems to be common is the inclusion of crew members. I've done some looking around at other period ship models and I've yet to see or hear of another with hand carved crew members. These are even action figures! The arms are pinned on with a single brad at the shoulder which allows the arms to be repositioned.
