Sylvester Brown Stephenson was born in Athens,Limestone County in April of 1837 to Samuel John Robert Stephenson and his wife Mary Shields Stephenson. He married Mary Holt in Limestone County,Alabama, in June 24,1857. He entered the service of the Confederate States in Madison County,Alabama on November,1861, as a private in Company 2,of John James Ward's Alabama Light Artillery. By 1864, Ward's was assigned to the Army of Tennessee and took part in the Dalton-Atlanta Campaign and participated in the battle of Kennesaw Mountain and in other battles around Atlanta. His artillery position was overrun at the battle of Selma and he finished the war with the 27th Tennessee Cavalry . I received the picture from the late Edwin Holt of Azle,Texas in the 1970's. Sylvester served as a blacksmith
