Margaret was born around 1416. She was the eldest surviving daughter of Ernest, duke of Austria, and his second wife Cymburgis of Masovia.
She married Friedrich II "der Sanftmütige", Elector of Saxony in Leipzig on 3 June 1431.
Margaret died at Altenburg on 12 December 1486 and was buried in the castle church.
Her place of birth is uncertain: according to Cawey she was born at Wiener Neustadt (see also Sächsiche Biografie: Margaretha, Kurfürstin von Sachsen. Various Wikipedia pages indicate Innsbruck as her birthplace. The sources are not cited.
