Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος [Eleftherios Kyriakou Venizelos] was a Cretan Greek statesman and prominent leader of the Greek national liberation movement. He is noted for his contribution to the expansion of Greece and promotion of liberal-democratic policies. He held office as prime minister of Greece for over 12 years, spanning eight terms between 1910 and 1933. He is often referred to as "The Maker of Modern Greece".[1]
Eleftherios was born on 23 Aug 1864 in Chania, Crete, then part of the Ottoman Empire, now Greece.[1][2] His parents were Kyriakos Venizelos and Styliani Ploumidaki.[1]
During the 1866 Cretan revolution, Eleftherios and his family fled to the island of Syros. They stayed there until 1872. He studied law at the University of Athens, graduating by 1886 and returning to Chania, Crete to work as a lawyer.[1]
He married Maria Katelouzou in Dec 1891. They had two children, Kyriakos (1892) and Sofoklis (1894). However Maria died in 1894 after the birth of her second child.[1]
After his defeat in the 1920 elections, he left for France in self-imposed exile.[1] Eleftherios K Venizelos married Helena Schilizzi in 1921 in London (Pancras), Middlesex, England.[3] They lived in Paris until 1927 when he returned to Chania.[1]
He died from a stroke on 18 Mar 1936 while in Paris, France. He was buried in Sophocles Venizelos Tomb, Akrotiri, Crete, Greece.[2]
