Honda Ishirō was born in Asahi Village, Higashitagawa District, Yamagata Prefecture on 7 May 1911. As a film director for Toho, he directed several kaiju and tokusatsu films. He is known for directing the 1954 kaiju film Gojira (Godzilla), which is about a fictional monster awakened by nuclear tests in the Pacific who then destroys large cities including Tokyo. Ishirō would then go on to direct several other Godzilla films, pitting the monster against other Toho kaiju, including Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah, while keeping the premise of the first film. He died on 28 February 1993.
