Biography

Mary was a Friend (Quaker)

Quaker records show she was born: Mary Scarborough, daughter of John and Mary Scarborough, was born 8th Month 8th, 1695.[1] 8th month 8th day is Oct 8, 1695 in new style calendar.

Marriage to Samuel Pickering: On November 7, 1712, Mary Scarborough married Samuel Pickering.[2][3] [4][5][6][7] They had five, or perhaps more, children. See Research Notes below.

Samuel Pickering was baptized 8-3-1684 and d 1-10-1727 Solebury Twp.,Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. Samuel bought 200 acres from John Scarborough for 58 lbs. They lived between Upper and Lower York roads, two miles east of Lahaska, Solebury Twp., Bucks Co., Pennsylvnia. [8]

Marriage to Joseph Lupton: On September 1, 1730, Mary Pickering, a widow, married Joseph Lupton at the Buckingham MM, Bucks, Pennsylvania.[9][10][11] They had three children.

From Hopwell Friends History:

A Joseph Lupton was one of the early treasurers of Hopewell Meeting. He was probably the one who, even in the midst of a bloody war, did not fear the Indian enough to pull in the sneck-string of his door at night. Concerning him Henry W Scarborough, lawyer and business man of Philadelphia, under date of Nov 3, 1934, writes:

"My Ancestor, Joseph Lupton, came from Yorkshire, England, and settled near Newtown, Bucks Co., PA., where he married Mercy Twining, dau of Stephen Twining. Stephen Twining and his father had emigrated from Eastham, Barnstable County, on Cape Cod, Mass., about 1700 to Bucks County. Subsequently Joseph Lupton removed to Solebury Township, Bucks County, where he married the widow of Samuel Pickering, whose maiden name was Mary Scarborough.
About 1742 Joseph Lupton and his said wife removed to Frederick County, VA., and took along with them some of their own children and some of the children, Pickerings and Luptons, by their first consorts...I think Joseph Lupton was one of the early clerks [he was a treasurer] of the Hopewell Monthly Meeting. I am descended form his eldest daughter,Elizabeth, who married Henry Paxon Jr. Their daughter Sarah Paxon married Joseph Wilkinson of Solesbury Township, Bucks County, PA. Their daughter Elizabeth married Crispin Pearson. Their daughter Mercy married Isaac Scarborough, whose son, Watson Scarborough, was my father."[12]

In 1741, Joseph Lupton, Mary and some of the Pickering and Lupton children removed to Frederick Co., Virginia which was then part of Orange Co., Virginia. In Virginia, they were members of the Hopewell and Crooked Run MM.

1741, 2mo 6. Joseph Lupton requests certificate from Buckingham MM, gct. Hopewell MM, for himself, wife, and family to move to Hopewell. John Dawson and Thos. Canby Jr. to inquire.

1741, 3mo 4. Report favorable to Joseph Lupton and his son Joseph;they also give a certificate.

Death: Mary (Scarborough) Pickering Lupton died 10 or 14 Jan 1787 in Frederick Co., Virginia.[13]

Research Notes

The profile for Elizabeth (Eliza) "Mary Light" Scarborough states that she, too, was born on August 8, 1695. The Friends records show only that a "Mary Scarborough" daughter of John and Mary Scarborough was born on that date. [1] Elizabeth is not mentioned in the Friends record cited above, but her profile refers to her as "Mary LIght". Further research is needed.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

Findagrave claims Mary Lupton was buried in Pennsylvania, which seems highly unlikely since there was an active Quaker church and burial ground in Frederick Co, VA where Mary died--called Hopewell.

An unsourced article (see footnote 8 above) states: "I have found in the Buckingham records the death of Mary Pickering, wife of Samuel Pickering, as occurring 1st month 14th, 1787." I'll do some followup on this.
