Genealogies published in the 1800s mis-identified the children of Edward and Rose (Rysse) Gilman, thus confusing the ancestry of several early New England immigrants. These errant materials were broadly distributed so that mistakes are found in countless online family files. Please cite reliable sources and use caution when editing this profile.
Edward Gilman was born about 1525. He married at Caston, Norfolk, England, 12 June 1550, Rose Rysse.[1][2][3][4]
Edward's will was dated 5 February 1572/3 and proved by his widow on 7 July 1573 at the Archdeaconry Court of Norwich. [5] In this will he, "devised his mansion house in Gaston (sic.) to his eldest son John, and his other estates were divided among his three other sons and five daughters." Lands at Saham Toney are mentioned in the will as well.[6] Walter Goodwin Davis published an abstract of Edward's 1572/3 will.[7]
Savage and Torrey. Both James Savage and Clarence Amon Torrey are descendants of Edward and Rose (Rysse) Gilman. See Gary Boyd Roberts, "Notable Kin: Seven Genealogists: Ancestors of John Farmer, Jr., James Savage, H.F. Waters, Mary L. Holman, C.A. Torrey, Elizabeth French Bartlett, and G. A. Moriarity, Jr.," in NEXUS, 13 (1995):25 (in James Savage), 26 (in Clarence Almon Torrey); digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors. James Savage's ancestry includes "… Nicholas Jacob & Mary Gilman; Edward Gilman (TP) & _____ (TP)." Clarence Almon Torrey's ancestry includes "... John Gilman & Anne Gurney … Edward Gilman (TP) & _____ (TP). For Savage's Gilman ancestry, Roberts cites "W. G. Davis, The Ancestry of Abel Lunt (1963), pp. 153-58"; for the Torrey entry, he cites "Notebook labeled 'Ancestry,' carton labeled 'Torrey' (#10) in C. A. Torrey's mss. collection, SG TOR 5 (147) at NEHGS" and other works, but none mention Gilman specifically.
Errors in Print. Various 1800s era published works mis-identified the children or progeny of Edward and Rose (Rysse) Gilman. The books included valuable information (dates, locations, wills, etc.), but errors were made in the use of that information to determine particular parent-child relationships.

Might we have assistance in severing Regnault's parent-child relationships?
I have added a disputed associations section toe Regnault's profile; companion research note entries have been added to the profiles of both Edward and Rose.
Hello Profile Managers, the England Project has been asked by the PGM Project to adopt and apply Project Protection (PPP) to this profile in order to preserve the accuracy of the lineage of Edward Gilman the emigrant. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any queries about this.

Jillaine Smith's note matches what Constance Le Neve (Gilman) Ames reported in 1950: that Edward "The Emigrant" was the son of an Edward. Samuel Le Neve Gilman over one hundred years ago stated that Edward's father was Robert, but doesn't the deposition evidence seem stronger? I hope every one will agree that Robert is not "The Emigrant's" father before all the merging takes place. Is it okay to start the merging?
