Biography

William was born in 1560 in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England, the son of James Phelps and Joan. He was baptized at Tewkesbury on 4th Aug 1560. [1]

William and Dorothy had the following children baptised at Tewkesbury:

  • Mary (1588)
  • Frances (1591)
  • Dorothy (1596)
  • William (1599)
  • James (1601)
  • Elizabeth (1603)

In 1592 and 1595, William was one of the churchwardens of Tewkesbury. [2]

William served as one of the Bailiffs of Tewkesbury in 1607/1608. He apparently also made an unsuccessful attempt at the position in the following year, and as a consequence was entirely expelled from the body corporate! [3]

William died on 28 Sept 1611 in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England. He was 51 yrs of age.

William died intestate and the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, on Sept. 28th, 1611, commissioned to Dorothy Phelps, "relict of William Phelps, late of Tewkesbury, deceased, to administer the goods and chattels of the said deceased." [4]

As part of the England Project managed profiles team I will be working on William and his family to improve the sources and biographies. Any new information or reliable sources much appreciated. Cheers, Elizabeth :-)
Hello Profile Managers - the England Project would like to comanage this profile with you, as there appears to be conflation with a man of the same name who emigrated to the American Colonies. I will send a Trusted List request directly from the England Project account. Please contact me directly if you have any questions about this.

Best wishes, Jo (England Project Managed Profiles Team coordinator)

Can anyone make the connection I mentioned in the previous comment?

I have 8 DNA links to William of Tewksbury and 5 others to William of Crewkerne, born in 1593. (Phelps-54). William has a gap in the DOB of his children, but all of these listed were born in Crewekerne. Perhaps William's father James had a son that moved to Crewekerne?
