Children

  • Zymen|Simon Westvaal, was bp. on 30 Jul 1721 (possibly at Dutchess Co., NY?), Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster County, New York; sponsors were: Gysbert Westvaal, Geertjen Westvaal[3]
  • Lidia|Lydia Westvaal was bp. on 15 Mar 1724 (possibly at Dutchess Co., Ny.?) Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster County, New York; sponsors were: Harmen Roosekrans, Eyke de Wit[4]; m. JACOB WESTBROEK, April 11, 1740, Minisink, Orange County, New York.
  • Jan (John) DeWitt Westphael was bp. 3 Apr 1726, poss. at Kingston.[5], [No KRDC Baptism Record found...] What happened to Jan??
  • Catrina (Catherine) Westphael was bp. on 17 Nov 1726.[6], [No KRDC bapt. record found.... ] It would appear that this Catrina Westphael m. Michael Harness at Hardy County, Va (now West Virginia),
Note: On 1728 Dec 01, Juriaan and Blandina sponsored the baptism of friends [7]

In 1732, Juriana moved his family to the Minisink-Machackemech area (now Port Jervis), Orange County, New York. There they had two more children christened by a missionary from the Kingston Church.<[8][Note: Baptisms conducted at the Minnisink area churches were recorded at the Kingston Reformed Dutch Church until about 1638. Quick-803 01:35, 5 August 2014 (EDT)]

  • Maria, Westvaal was bp. on 4 Jul 1733 in the Minisink Area, poss. New Jersey.[9] [This was one of a batch of 17 baptisms recorded for that day. This implies that birth took place in the greater Minisink area sometime before July 4th. Maria married Petrus Kortrecht, 17 April 1754.

In 1735, Jurian bought a farm across the Delaware River from Machackemech, in present Matamoras, Pike, Pennsylvania[10] and there had daughter:

  • Annaatje Westphal, was bp. on 3 May 1737 at now Matamoras, Pike County, PA.. Bp would have occurred at Minisink RDC, or was performed by Traveling Domine. Baptism was recorded at the central Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster County, New York; sponsors were: Jan Oosterhout, Annaatje Westphal.[11]

Notes:

On 1744 April 23, Jury Westfael and Blandia De Witt sponsored the baptism of their first grandson, Jury[12]
On July 05, 1747, Jury Westfael, as Jurg Westval, and Blandia de Wit sponsored the baptism of Blandina van Asken[13]

In 1747, Jurian moved his family to present Moorefield, West Virginia; except for married daughter Lydia and married son Simon[14]. Daughters that accompanied them would have been Catrina (age 21), Maria (age 14), and Annaatje (age 10).

Estate Distribution

This does not present Jurian's will. The source relates to the administration of Jurian's and Blandina's wills, by son-in-law. Michael Harness, husband of daughter Catrina, who was the subject of the genealogy profile.

The import of this information is leads to find actual Wills of Jurian and Blandina.

Note: Jurian Westfael, was known as Eurie (a nickname). Also note the references to the name Westfall. Jurian did not apparently use the name Westfall. but that appellation is apparently assigned to him by descendents that had changed their names to Westfall.

Michael Harness' second involvement with an estate was with that of his new father-in-law, Eurie Westfael, who was, with his wife Blandina, a relative new-comer to the South Branch area. [moved there in 1747][15] This couple, said to have married in 1719 in Kingston, Esopus County, New York, had some six children, at least one of whom, a daughter named Catharine, came with them to Augusta County, Virginia. [16] Were it not for an almost incidental comment in the Court Order Book, we might never have known of his [Michael Harness Jr] relationship with that family. When naming the Administrator of Eurie's will, it reads: "Michael Harness (son-in-law of Eurie Westfall) moved according to law to be named Admr of the Estate. Court granted him Certificate for letters of Admin." [17] This statement was crucial to validate the full identification of Michael's wife and children later.

Death

Jurian and wife Blandina died in 1753. Jurian apparently died first, possibly killed by Indians, in 1753 [18] Son-in-law Michael Harness jr. handled the estates.

"Later in 1753, Michael's wife [Catrina or Catherine] suffered another blow when her mother died. On 21 November 1753, court records disclose the return of an inventory of the estate of Blandina Westfall to the court, and that "Michael Harnes Administrator" had sold the contents. It had been valued at L95, consisted mostly of livestock, and probably represented also what remained of Eurie's estate."[19] [20]

It is not known where Jurian and Blandina are buried. Their daughters Maria and Annetje returned to Machackemech , Orange, NY to be near brother Simon, who lived in a stone house just south of where the Neversink River empties into the Delaware River[21].

  15. There is some confusion about the given name of Westfall, because Lyman Chalkley, in his magisterial and sometimes error-prone, Chronicles of the Scotch-lrish Settlement of Virginia: Extracted from the Original Court Records of Augusta County. 1745-1800 (3 vols., Baltimore, 1965),111, p. 58 [and elsewhere] refers to this Westfall as "Euric." That is his incorrect reading of the nick-name of "Jurien," or George in English. It actually is spelled "Eurie" in the Augusta County Court Order Book 3, n.p. [p. 424], and in Will Book 1, pp. 490-491.
  16. "The Jurien Westfall Family," in Virginia Carpenter Jansen and George Jansen, Jr., Westfall Ancestry of the Jansen Daughters (1996-), p. 43. The Jansens list Catharine's birth date as 17 November 1728, but cite no document. Although she was listed as the fourth of six children, there is no record indicating whether Eurie and Blandina brought other children with them. the Jansens also note that when a son, Simon, had his first child baptized in Minnisink, New York, on 23 April 1744, Eurie and Blandina were listed in the church records as the sponsors.

  18. Augusta County Will Book I, pp. 524-525.
  19. Will Book I, pp. 524-525. "We have no idea if the deaths of Catharine's parents were due to Indian attacks connected with the French and Indian War then raging throughout the valley, disease or physical deterioration. Eurie was not yet 60 when he died. The estate value probably represents a valuation in Virginia pounds, not English. "

Westfall-180 and Westphael-1 appear to represent the same person because: Please approve the merge of Westfall-180 into Westphael-1. They are the same person.

Jurian|Jury descendined from a progenitor from Westphalia was known by many variations of his surname, non of which was Westfall. This is a more modern appellation, belonging to descendents.
