Biography

Lea was baptized April 23, 1723 in the Old Dutch Reformed Church at Sleepy Hollow, daughter of Elyas Canclie and Crestena his wife. Witnesses were Herrick Lent and Cornelia [Van Weert] his wife, and Gerrit Van Weert, and Catharinina, his wife. [1]

On September 15, 1744 Lea married William Lent, son of Jan Lent (born 1686-) & Marytie De Ronde, in Sleepy Hollow Reformed Church. [2]

“Willim Lendt j.m., b. on the Mennaer of Cortlandt, and l. there, and Lea Canckelie, j.d., b. on the Mannaer of Cortlandt, and l. in Philips Burgh”.

The initials "j.m." and "j.d" following the names of the bride and the groom stand for "young master" and "young damsel" (or daughter) and indicate that neither had been previously married.

Both were born in the district of Cortlandt Manor, in Westchester County, New York. Willim (aka Willem) was still living there, but Lea's parents had moved to Philips Burgh, the district of Philipsburg Manor.

Philips Burgh was a thriving farming, milling, and trading center owned by the Philipses, a family of Anglo-Dutch merchants, in the current area known as Sleepy Hollow, Westchester County, New York.
