William was among the early settlers of Newbury, Massachusetts.[1][2] He married Cutbury Gibbs there in 1652.[3][4][5][6]
In Newbury, William and Cutbury were cited at least twice for legal and moral offenses. In 1653, "William Trotter and wife fined and to be whipped for defiling themselves before the marriage bed."[7] In 1659, William was cited "for slanderous speeches, to make publick acknowledgement next lecture day."[8]
They appear to have gotten along better in New Jersey, where they were again among the first settlers. William took an oath of allegiance in Elizabethtown at the first town meeting in Feb. 1666. He is listed by Hatfield as one of the original Elizabethtown Associates. In 1676, his son Samuel applied for a survey of 90 acres in the Elizabethtown Tract, previously belonging to his father, then deceased.[9]
William helped to recruit a number of new settlers from Newbury to New Jersey and to establish the town of Woodbridge. A bridge over the Elizabeth River was named for him, now part of Trotters Lane at the northwest boundary of the city.[9]
According to Hatfield, William was deceased by 11 Sep. 1673. He was not present on that date, when most of the Elizabethtown Associates took an oath of allegiance to Dutch authorities.[9] The Dutch retook NJ and NY in Aug. 1673 while England and Netherlands were at war, and relinquished it under treaty in Feb. 1674. Most of the Associates took the oath, including his son Samuel.
Date: Before 11 Sep. 1673
Place: Elizabethtown, NJ
Date: 1677
Place: Woodbridge, Middlesex, New Jersey, United States[25]
There is a record of marriage between William Trotter and Alice Ebell in New York City, 28 Sep. 1667.[26][10] And in July 1668 Willem Traeter and Elsje Evels were recorded for the baptism of their son Jacob at the Dutch Reformed Church in New York.
Was that William of Elizabethtown?
Alice is referenced as both Alice and Elsie Trotter in New York court records in 1670. She had traveled to Boston with her husband in 1669, but the records do not name the husband (then deceased).[27]
Abraham Hatfield suggests an Elizabethtown connection with citations to Edwin Hatfield's History of Elizabeth (pp. 78, 96), but the references are invalid, with nothing relevant at the pages cited.[28] There are several references to William elsewhere in the History but none to a wife. Otherwise there is no basis to suggest that it was William of Elizabethtown who married Alice Ebel.[9]
Also, it would have been unusual for a New Jersey yoeman farmer to have married in New York City, into a family with no Elizabethtown connections, and to have travelled to Boston.

William Trotter christening appears in Auckland-St. Andrews, Durham, England, 04 Apr 1630 s/o Anthony.
Anthony Trotter married Gertrude Wren there 21 Apr 1618. This marriage is also listed in the Boyd's Marriage Index and noted in the Wills & Inventories for Anthony's father,
William Trotter.
Why are the Trotters (some of them) designated as New Netherland Settlers? No sources are cited, and I can find none, that place them anywhere but Massachusetts and New Jersey.
"New Jersey" is your answer. Much of northern New Jersey was included in New Netherland, and at various times some members have assumed that most or all of New Jersey before about 1700 was part of New Netherland. This man does not fit into the New Netherland project scope, so I'll remove the project box and project account from the profile.
ADDED: It appears, however, that his second wife and her subsequent husband (Hatfield) probably qualify for the "New Netherland" label.
I removed most of these, but it appears that Rebecca's profile was made PPP because of concern about genealogical disputes of some sort. If that's still an issue, we'll need to find another project to adopt the profile and oversee the PPP.
See comment by profile manager, former leader. Says she didn't intend PPP but put in blocks to protect merges, and blocks can be removed if there is no other basis which seems to be case here. She merged Rebecca in 2012.
I stand corrected on the PPP history. It does look like Lindsay applied the PPP; it was later that the profile was added to the New Netherland project (by me, as it happens), apparently as a result of requests from other members. (I never researched this profile, but I recall that in 2018 there were many requests to add the project to profiles like these.)
That comment in 2012 has no bearing on how WikiTree handles profile management and PPP now.
Before I replied to you, I reviewed the profile history and noted that there are something like 9 people on the trusted list, there had been a bunch of merges on the profile (some by Lindsay and some by other members), and there had been concerns about incorrect or unsourced genealogy (connections to wrong parents, children or spouses). Those kinds of things are indications of a profile that should have project protection.
How certain are you that William's parents are William Trotter & Gertrude Wren? Their son William was baptized 01 May 1636 (making him about 16 at time of marriage). The William baptized in Auckland-St. Andrew on 04 Apr 1630 was the son of Anthony.
I don't think "we" are "certain" of anything. This profile was created by a GEDCOM import 13 years ago and has had only slight changes since then.
If you have sourced information to add to this profile or the profiles of the claimed parents (George Trotter and Gertrude (Wren) Trotter (1610-abt.1660)), please do so. It does appear from notes on the profiles that there is no evidence for the connected parents. If the members who have done the research are convinced of the lack of evidence, the parents should be disconnected.
I have removed the project protection from Trotter-14.
Would NNS like to take on the third wife Alice Ebel`s profile. I`ve just added some bio notes, she was in New York, her 2 marriage appears to have been in NY. 28 Sep 1667 to Wm Trotter, abt 27 Nov 1671 in the Dutch Church, NY to Thomas Hatfield.
This profile is a work-in-progress. Under the developing rules on historically-significant ancestors over 300-years-old supervisors are doing expedited merges. We need one manager to take primary responsibility for each profile. Management rights and/or trusted status may be terminated per policy. Please see http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Historically-significant_ancestors for more details. Please feel free to contact me with any questions as well. Thanks!
