Biography

Aagjen was baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York, on 2 April 1721, recorded as the child of Abraham Freer and Jannetjen de Graaff. Witnesses were Zalomon Freer and Neeltjen Freer.[1]

Disputed Identity

She has sometimes been identified as the wife of Isaac Deyo, but that interpretation is not accepted here. There were three girls (first cousins) named Aagjen Freer born at approximately the same time. One of them married Isaac Dejou (Deyo), and researchers have reached different conclusions as to which girl this was. Morrison's 1903 article on "The Freer Family" identified this girl (Aagjen, the daughter of Abraham Freer and Jennetje de Graef who was baptized in 1721), as having married Isaac De Joo and Aagjen, the daughter of Hugo Freer and Marytjen de Witt who was baptized in 1725, as having married Isaac Deyon (a name that appears to be based on a bad transcription of a record). Morrison assigned three children to one wife and five children to the other.[2] Ruth Heidgerd, in her 1968 book on The Freer Family identified Isaac's wife as the daughter of Abraham Freer and Jannetje de Graaf who was baptized in 1721.[3] Heidgerd did not explain her reasoning. A third Aagjen Freer, daughter of Salomon Freer and Claartjen Westvaal, was baptized in 1722 and therefore also could have married in 1744. Morrison suggested that it was possible that she was the girl who married Isaac De Joo, but stated that he had placed that Aagjen as the daughter of Abraham Freer.[4]

Based on analysis of the names of the children of Isaac de Joo and Aagjen Freer and the identities of baptism witnesses, the wife of Isaac de Joo is identified here as Aagjen Freer, daughter of Hugo Freer and Maria de Witt.

I think this girl is mistakenly connected to the wrong parents.

The Aagjen who was baptized in April 1721 was the daughter of Abraham Freer and Jannetjen de Graaff. I have not seen a record for Zalomon Freer having a daughter of that name in any year (although under Dutch custom he should have named a daughter for his mother), and Zalomon Freer was not even married until later in 1721. Perhaps there has been some confusion related to the fact that Zalomon witnessed the baptism of this girl, but together with Neeltjen Freer (who I think is his sister Freer-462).

Correction! Salomon and Claartje did have a daughter Aagjen. She was baptized in Kingston church in 1722. Here is the record (Hoes, page 142):
  • 1722. 29 July. Zalomon Freer, Claartjen Westvaal. Aagjen. Witnesses: Abraham Freer, Junior. Jannetjen de Graaf.

Heidgerd shows no further information for her.

After seeing the extent of confusion that exists in other profiles for the Freer family, I am creating a new profile for the Aagjen who was the real daughter of Salomon and Claartjen, and I will correct the parents on this Freer-19 profile.
