Geesje (family unknown) was born about 1591 in Altenbruch, Niedersachsen, Germany. [13] She married Barent Van Rotmerz about 1611 in Hanover, Stadt Hannover, Niedersachsen, Germany. She emigrated July 1640 from Altenbruch, Niedersachsen, Germany to Fort Orange, New Netherland with second husband and two children on the Den Waterhondt. Her will was dated June 1642 and she died about 1658 in New Netherland[13]

Immigration

Gijsje Barents (Berents) wife of Pieter Jacobsz; is charged with board on den Waterhondt in 1640, and credited with 28 days' work done by her husband on the house of Arent van Curler. It is not unlikely that her husband was the same person as Pieter Jacobsz, constapel of Fort Orange, who on April 15, 1652, by order of Johannes Dyckman tore van Slichtenhorst's proclamation from the house of Gijsbert Cornelisz, the tavern keeper.[25]

Will of Pieter Jacobsen and Gysje Pieters, his wife [22] [in the year] of the birth of our Lord and Savior [Jesus Christ], one thousand six hundred and forty-two, the [ ] of June, new style, before me, C[orn]ells van Tlenhoven, secretary In New Netherland appointed by the General Chartered West India Company, appeared Pieter Jacobsen from Bensborch (note bottom of paragraph) with Gysje Pltersen, his lawful wife, residing In Port Orange, situated on the North Elver of New Netherland, both In bodily health, up and about and having full possession and use of their senses, memory and understanding, as seemed apparent to us, who declared that they, reflecting on the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the hour thereof, and wishing to anticipate all such uncertainty by certain testamentary disposition, have, of their own free will, full knowledge and deliberate Judgment, without Inducement, persuasion or misleading on the part of any one, made and concluded, as they hereby do make and conclude, their testament and disposition of last will in form and manner following, to wit: First, after express revocation and recalling of all testaments and other dispositions whatsoever which they, the testators, or either of them, may before the date hereof have In any wise made, executed or concluded, they the testators, commend their souls always and whenever they shall depart out of as is necessary hereby expressly derogate and render void. Done in Fort Amsterdam, New Netherland. This is the X mark of Gysje Pieters, above named. Note: Intended for Bynsburch, or Bljnsburg, a village near Leiden. See Early Becords of Albany. 3:226, and Van Bensselaer Bowler MSS.. p. 822, where the name of Pieter Jacobsen's wife is given as Gysje (Geesie) Barents, so that she was called Pieters after her husband. Geesjie filed a joint will with Pieter Jacobsz van RYNSBURGH, a gunner at Ft. Orange, NY in Jun-1642. On 12-Apr-1648, Pieter paid for an adult pall at Ft. Orange, so it is likely that Geesjie had died that previous winter or in the spring.
Annetje BARENT's mother, Geesie BARENTS, so called probably as wife of Barent, was in this country, at Fort Orange, as early as 1642, when she made a joint will with her second husband, Pieter JACOBSEN, calling herself "Gysje PIETERS," meaning wife of Pieter, in which all their property was left to her daughter, "Annitje ALBERTS," ALBERTS in this usage meaning wife of Albert. In 1667, Geesie BARENTS was still living and stood sponsor at Kingston at the baptism of her great-granddaughter Cornelia, daughter of Roeloff SWARTWOUT and Aefje Albertse BRATT (American Genealogist).

Death

It is most likely that Geesje died between 1642[11] and 1658[12][29] in New York.

Since Pieter made the first of three payments to the deacons of Fort Orange for an adult funeral pall, on 12 April 1658, it appears that Geesie had died that previous winter or spring.

Bef 1663 New Amsterdam, NY[30][31]

Some genealogies say that Geesje lived to after 1667, citing the baptism of her great granddaughter Cornelia Swartwout[32], which lists a Geesje Barents as a witness.[33] However, as shown in her will, Gisje was then known as Pieters and so this witness must be someone else.

Van Rotmers-5 and Unknown-44707 appear to represent the same person because: Profile was created through an imported gedcom. Birth year the same. Death year different but probably inaccurate. Same husband and daughter. Keep Unknown as LNAB.

clearly Geesje did not die in 1642 and in fact attended her great granddaughter Cornelia Swartwout's baptism in 1667 - unless errors have been made and that was some namesake

Geesie and Pieter filed a joint will in New Amsterdam in June 1642 leaving all of their separate estates to each other. If Geesie died first, Pieter was to pay her daughter Annatie, twenty carolus guilders. Since Pieter made the first of three payments to the deacons of Fort Orange for an adult funeral pall, on 12 April 1658, it appears that Geesie had died that previous winter or spring. Gissel or Geesie Barentsdr. [Barentsdochter] assisted her daughter Annatie Barents Van Rottmer at the signing of banns on 27 March 1632 for her marriage to Albert Andriessen. Annetie was 24 years old. When Annatie's brother Barent Barents signed his banns at the age of 22, on 21 Apr. 1632 he too was assisted by his mother. At the time Gissel was living on the Schaepensteegje or Sheep Alley in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Geesie's husband Barent Rottmer is never listed, so it is assumed he died before 1632.

When Geesie Barents came to New Netherland on board "Den Waterhondt" in the fall of 1640 her husband Barent Rottmer was dead. By the end of 1640 she had married Pieter Jacobse Van Rynsburgh, whether in Holland or not is not known. Pieter was probably the West India Company gunner at Fort

Barents-29 and Unknown-44707 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest maternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the unknown patronymic NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks! Two Barents von Rottmers were merged together and these wives both represent the same person. The Barents patronymic is believed to have been a reference to Barent von Rottmer and may not be her LNAB.

Barentsdochter-5 and Unknown-44707 appear to represent the same person because: This is the same woman, and she needs to be merged into the NNS PPP Unknown. No tree conflicts. The "Barentsdochter" patronym is most probably false, because somebody seems to have created that along the way of generating this match by thinking that since she appeared with the Barents name in sources, that she must be a daughter of a Barent, and so they wrongly Dutchified it into a full birth patronym. However, she was known as Barents because her first husband was Barent. Calling wives by their husband's name, as in wife of Barent, was common. Her second husband was Pieter Jacobsz van RIJNSBURG, and so she was also known as Geesje Pieters. She should have Barents and Pieters as CLN and AKA. The notes of the match profile Barentsdochter-5 identifies both of her husbands by name, as they are attached to the Unknown patronym profile. Thanks!

Barentsdochter-5 and Unknown-44707 are not ready to be merged because: I'm not sure that this is the same person. Totally different regions of birth in the current Germany, marriage dates and other dates.

Petiers-1 and Unknown-44707 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest maternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge. No tree conflicts. These matches have been reviewed by the New Netherland Settlers Merge Approval System, and the "Green" destination NNS profile is protected as PPP, and the "Merge Pending" profile is now ready and able to be merged into it. I saved the data to the bios. This is explained in the earlier Comments, but her correct birth LNAB is unknown, and her name as Pieters and Barents is how she was known later in her married life by her name as "wife of" her husband's first name, as was common practice back then in some cases.
