Biography

Flag of Lancashire (adopted 2008)
Lawrence Ellison was born in Blackburn, Lancashire, England.

Lawrence Ellison, the progenitor of this branch of the Allisons, according to "Thompson's History of Long Island, New York," was a Puritan, and came from Watertown, Massachusetts, to Wethersfield, Connecticut; removed from there to Stamford, thence to Hempstead, Long Island, with other emigrants who accompanied Rev. Richard Denton in 1644.

Most of the early families of Hempstead were under his leadership, and came from Hemel, Hempstead, England, about twenty miles from London. Some, however, came from Halifax, County of York, whence Rev. Richard Denton himself emigrated. The latter was for a time minister in Coley Chapel, Halifax. These emigrants are supposed to have been a part of the colony which came across seas with Robert Winthrop and Sir Richard Saltonstall in 1630.[1]

He died in Hempstead, in North Riding, Yorkshire, Long Island, New York, in 1664. At the court of sessions, held at Hempstead 2 January 1665, Letters of Administration on his estate were granted to his three sons, Richard, Thomas, and John Ellison. This is the oldest record but one recorded in the surrogate's office in the city of New York. In legal documents he signed his name by "his mark."

  1. Richard Ellison ' (1629), res. Hempstead, New York. He was born presumably, about 1620. Richard's children's records are under "Allison" in Braintree, Massachusetts.
  2. Thomas Ellison' (1638), res. Hempstead, New York. He was born presumably, about 1622.
  3. John Ellison" (1645), res. Hempstead, New York. He was born presumably, about 1624.

On the paternal side, the earliest American ancestor of whom we have any record was Lawrence Ellison, one of the early English settlers on Long Island, who died at Hempstead, Long Island, New York in 1664,

Hi Guys,

Please note that this profile has the following suggestion - Error 886: Died before category time frame the Mount Repose Cemetery, Haverstraw, New York - The category needs to be removed as this cemetery did not exist until 1852 - The find a grave reference should not be used as the location is incorrect for his burial. Appreciate if you could fix this suggestion as it is the last category suggestion left in Lancashire

Thanks

Something about John Ellington being in court? and named as Lawrence Ellison's son in law? Thank you, Mary

Hi Mary, I think you might be thinking of Henry Linington, who married Lawrence' daughter Katherine. Onderdonk cites Hempstead town records asserting that there was a bond given for the recognizance of Henry by "his father and brother-in-law, Lawrence and John Ellison." https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=yale.39002013506937&view=1up&seq=68

I have looked and looked and cannot find this record in the Hicks transcript of the Hempstead town records (https://archive.org/details/cu31924092207764/page/n6/mode/1up?view=theater). Onderdonk seems to have been using a different (in page numbering and in substance) copy of the town records. The records which do appear in both Onderdonk's summary and the Hicks transcript almost immediately diverge as to page numbering, and some records just don't seem to appear in Hicks, or the original spellings as preserved in Hicks are so bad that I can't find them by searching it.

I see so many different places of birth given for Lawrence Ellison on the web. Some say Hempstead on Long Island, NY, which is definitely an error. Some say he was born in Lancaster, England. Presumably they mean Lancashire. Some say his place of birth was Blackburn, Lancashire, England. However, I don't think that either are correct. Lawrence was married to Mary Rishton at St. Mary's Church in Blackburn, Lancashire and his children were baptized in that church. He probably lived in Blackburn until his migration to America, but he wasn't born there. Researchers who descend from Lawrence Ellison who are members of the Allison/Ellison DNA Project say he was born in Howden, Yorkshire, England in 1599/1600.

Lawrence was not born in Howden. His father Edmond Lawrencius was b. there but migrated to Gargrave and then to Colne and then to Blackburn See Blackburn Parish Registers 1547-1812.

There is no mention of Lawrence in Gargrave. He first appears in Blackburn Parish church Register 1600-1660 in 1614 under baptisms Pg.36 (Lawrence s. of Edmund Ellison Sept 11.) In that year he would have been about 14 years old which indicates he was not born in Blackburn. Colne was a textile town between Gargrave and Blackburn. Its about 10 miles S/W of Gargrave and was a frequent stop off for the many textile workers migrating from Gargrave to Blackburn.

Is there a good source for Mary Rishton as wife of Lawrence?

Ellen, it's not a copy/paste error. The English did call New York Yorkshire and they did have it divided into ridings. See this wikipedia entry. You can find references to these place names in deeds and wills of the period, e.g. here, in Sarah Davis' conveyance, she calls her husband, "Jonathan Daves lattly deseased of ye Towne of Jamaica in ye North Rydinge of Yorkshire upon Long Island." Of course, that wasn't the case in 1654, though. :)

The place name may look odd, but it is true that in 654 Hempstead on Long Island was part of New Netherland.

And Andrea: The biography used to say he died in Hempstead, New York, but last month you added a couple of paragraphs of text that included the anomalous place name of "Hempstead, in the North Riding, Yorkshire, Long Island, N. Y." (did Yorkshire, England get onto Long Island?). That looks like it could be an error in copy-pasting words from another electronic source, but I don't see a source citation for that text and I haven't found it in other sources cited. Could you please review your additions, verify that the information is what you intended, and cite your sources?

Please review Ellison-1700 who is the son of Edmond and Jane born in 1614 Blackburn, Lancashire, England... Found this information at (https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/KCM2-QD3) Family Seach... Is this the same person Lawrence, or the Grand Father of Ellison-1700? You have listed in the Birth 1590.

On the paternal side, the earliest American ancestor of whom we have any record was Lawrence Ellison, one of the early English settlers on Long Island, who died at Hempstead, in 1664, in which year, at least, letters of administration were granted to his sons, Richard, Thomas and John. From the fact that we find on the parish records of Braintree, Massachusetts, the birth record of seven children of Richard Ellison, (the eldest of the three sons of Lawrence Ellison) and Thomazine, his wife, the eldest in 1642, and the youngest in 1660, it is naturally inferred that Lawrence Ellison was one of the party of New Englanders who formed the first English Colony that settled on Long Island before the middle of the seventeenth century. https://books.google.com/books?pg=PA1207&lpg=PA1207&dq=John+Ellison+died+1761&sig=u3xPRnEGXWJXj3z-89c7EuoVq_o&id=9NQ4AQAAMAAJ&ots=KTtMPoXI9d&output=text
