Biography

Daniel was born about 1691. He was the son of Samuel Merwin and Sarah Woodin.[1] He was baptized with his twin sister Deborah 15 Mar 1691, 6 days after the death of their mother.[2] He passed away in Oct 1761 and he was buried 30 Oct 1731 at Wallingford.[3]

He married (1) Joanna Stevens and settled at Wallingford before 1713 when their first child was born. Children born at Wallingford:

  1. Daniel Merwin b. 19 Nov 1713[4][5]
  2. Henry Merwin b. 28 Dec 1715[6][7]
  3. Abigail Merwin b. 6 Aug 1718[8][9] No further record
  4. Stevens Merwin b. 12 Aug 1720[10][11]
  5. Ebenezer Merwin b. 2 Apr 1724[12][13]; d. unm. 26 Aug 1745 in Woodstock while returning from Cape Breton[14]

He married (2) Elizabeth, the widow of Barnabas Lewis 4 Mar 1730 at Wallingford by Capt. Yall.[15] Children born at Wallingford:

  1. Johanna Merwin b. 5 Apr 1731[16]
  2. Deborah (per The Merwin Family in America; not found in Connecticut Vital Records) No Further Record

Daniel died intestate and his widow was the administrator of his estate in Feb 1762, just prior to her remarriage to Joseph Holt.[17]

Research Notes

  • His second wife Elizabeth was the widow of Barnabas Lewis, who died 1 Oct 1729 at Wallingford. It is not proven that she was a Wells. A Daniel Merwin of Durham married an Elizabeth Wells of Haddam at Durham in 1738.
  • With regard to Daniel Merwin of Durham and Elizabeth Wells of Haddam, Joanna (Merwin) Page is currently linked to them as a child. That couple did not marry until 1738. Joanna was born at Wallingford in 1731 and she married Timothy Page at Wallingford in 1750. It makes more sense that she is the child of this Daniel of Wallingford and his 2nd wife Elizabeth Lewis Merwin later Holt also of Wallingford who were married in 1730.

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Daniel:
