Anne (Windsor) Laurence KG KT GCVO is a member of the House of Windsor.

Anne, Princess Royal, is the second child and only daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. She was born on 15 Aug 1950 at Clarence House in London, [2] [3] and is now 16th in line to the throne.

Her middle names come from her mother (Elizabeth), her maternal grandmother (Alice), and her great grandmother (Louise). Her first gifts were an identity card, a ration book, a bottle of cod-liver oil, and a bottle of orange juice.[4] A twenty-one gun salute in Hyde Park announced the birth.

Although she had a governess for her early education, Anne went to boarding school when she was 13. She finished school with 6 O-levels and two A-levels, then devoted herself to royal engagements from the age of 18 (she has now completed 20,000 engagements).

Anne Eventing in the Netherlands

Princess Anne was voted 'BBC Sports Personality of the Year' in 1971, as she emerged as an excellent equestrienne. She competed in eventing championships and horse racing, including the Diamond Stakes at Royal Ascot. For several years she competed as part of the British Eventing Team, including their participation in the 1976 Olympic Games (Montreal), where Anne rode the queen's horse, Goodwill. Anne suffered a concussion during her eventing course, but got back on her horse and completed it. She also participated in the Badminton Horse Trials and in a charity horse race at Epsom Derby. She also took part in the BBC TV Show A Question of Sport - a panel game which asked questions of a number of sports personalities.

Princess Anne and then-Lieutenant Mark Phillips were engaged on 29 May 1973, and were married on 14 November of the same year in Westminster Abbey. [5] The wedding was broadcast on TV, and the audience was estimated at 100 million. Phillips was offered an earldom, but refused, so their two children were born without titles. Anne is also a grandmother of five. However, the couple separated in 1989 and divorced in 1992, sharing custody of the children.

Timothy Laurence and Princess Anne

Princess Anne married Timothy Laurence (then a naval Commander, now Vice Admiral) on 12 December 1992 at Craithie Kirk (near Balmoral Castle) in Scotland. Laurence did not receive a peerage, but was given a knighthood in 2011.

The Princess has visited many countries and territories as well as areas of the United Kingdom, such as Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Jamaica, and the Soviet Union. In 2014, she visited Canada as part of her "Everyday Heroes" tour, where she is reported to have said " 'Keep me busy. I'm here to work. I'm here to do good things. I'm here to meet as many people as possible." [6]

Trooping the Colour

She is viewed as the hardest-working royal, outshining even her mother, The Queen. She was president of 'Save the Children' for 47 years, and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for her work. She is involved with, or is patron of, St John Ambulance Cadets, British Universities and Colleges Sport, the Royal National Children's Foundation, the Royal Society of Arts, and the Royal College of Occupational Therapists. She was elected as Chancellor of the University of London and the University of Edinburgh and was the Queen's High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. Yet, despite all this, Princess Anne still managed to represent Great Britain at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Princess Anne and Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence now reside at St James's Palace and Gatcombe Park.
