Biography

Marritje (sometimes called Mary) was a daughter of Tjerck Claeszen De Witt and Barbara Andriessen, who married in New Amsterdam, New Netherland, in 1656. She was born in Kingston, New York, or its vicinity.[1] Her birth date is estimated as 1680;[2] she would have been baptized in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York, but her baptism is not on record. Hoes lists only five baptisms in Kingston that year;[3] apparently the records of other baptisms were lost. .

She was married first to Hendrick Hendricksen (Kortreght). Their marriage was recorded in the Reformed Dutch Church at Kingston on 3 November 1700; they had posted their banns earlier.[1][4] This marriage appears to have ended in divorce, as both Marritje and Hendrick both married again.

She was married for a second time to Jan Macklin, a native of Scotland, on 6 September 1702. Their marriage was recorded in the Kingston church.[5][6][7]

Parents

Her parents have not been verified. She was probably named for a maternal aunt, Marritje Andries. Probate Records by Gustave Anjou, page 56-57, lists her as "Maritie", the daughter of Tjerk DeWitt. Tjerk and Barbara Dewitt appear as baptismal sponsors for Tjerk, Marritje's son. Another researcher indicates she married Hendrick Hendricksen Kortright, son of Hendrick Jansen Kortreght. Stewart deWitt's research indicates she was the daughter of Tjerk DeWitt and Barbara Andriessen. She apparently divorced her first husband and remarried.[8]

DeWitt-1120 and De Witt-42 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest maternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks!

DeWitt-707 and De Witt-42 appear to represent the same person because: Info matches. De Witt is the NNS project's preferred LNAB for her, and De Witt-42 is the lowest-numbered profile that has received project protection, so it's the merge destination.

De Witt-57 and De Witt-42 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, same birth info, etc. De Witt-42 is the NNS project's green-marked PPP profile for the lowest-numbered instance of this LNAB.
