William Paul Schlegel was born Paul Wilhelm Schlegel, 7 Sep 1874, in Kolmar, Posen, Prussia, the son of Georg Burchard Schlegel Emma Pauline Vogelsang.

He immigrated from Kolmar, Posen, age 16, sailing from Hamburg on 15 Mai 1891, and arriving in New York City on 23 May 1891.
