Martha Knight was born around the end of 1695 or January 1696 in Byberry Twp., Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Giles Knight, Jr., and his wife, Mary (English) Knight. The family were Quakers, members of the Society of Friends.
Martha Knight married Thomas Rakestraw on September 30, 1715 in the Abington Monthly Meeting, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1]
Unfortunately, Martha (Knight) Rakestraw died in 1716, possibly due to complications surrounding child-birth. It was a leading cause of death of young women at that time and place. She had no living children, so far as is known.
"Thomas Rakestraw, son of William Rakestraw and most probably by the first wife Grace, died 17 3rd mo. 1728... was granted a certificate to Abington Monthly Meeting to marry, 30 7th mo. 1715, and he married there, Mary Knight, daughter of Giles and Mary Knight. Thomas is mentioned in Giles Knight's will dated 10 8th mo. 1726, probated 7 Nov. 1726 (Wills E:6), but Mary is not; but there is no record of her death. He married third, in 1720, Mary Wilkins..."[2]
