Nanning Harmanse was a son of Harmen Bastiaense and Hester Tjerkse (Dircks). He was born in Beverwyck, New Netherland, during the 1650s or 1660s. Over time he came to be known by the surname "Visscher."[1][2]
He married Alida Vinhagen on 6 January 1686.[2] They had ten children, all baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany, New York.[1]
As a young man, Nanning was a fur trader. He was a member of the McGregorie Expedition that ventured deep into Indian country in 1687. After being arrested and imprisoned by the French, he settled down in Albany as a businessman. In 1699, he swore allegiance to the King of England. In 1698, the city council granted his petition to erect a sawmill. In 1711, he was called "master" of the sloop Mary.[1]
He was elected alderman in Albany in 1708. He also served in the militia.[1]
Nanningh Vischer died in April 1730 and was buried from the Albany Reformed Dutch Church on 8 April 1730. [3] His remains were later re-interred in Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands, New York.[2][4]
