Biography

Pieter Janse was before 22 April 1634 when he was baptized at Turnhout, Flanders, a son of Jan Loockermans and Catharina Degruyter.[1]

He emigrated to New Netherland, probably traveling on the ship De Bonte Koe in June 1651, together with his uncle Govert Loockermans and brother Jacob.[2] By 1653 he had received a land patent in Beverwyck, where he had became a carpenter and inn-keeper.[3] On November 16, 1656, he received a land patent in Beverwyck (now Albany, New York). On May 27, 1660 he signed a petition as a small fur trader in Beverwyck, using the name Pieter Loockermans de Jonge (i.e., the Younger). A document from 1669 identifies him as a carpenter. [1]

He married Maritje Lambertse circa 1665 to 1670. They are identified as the parents of two daughters.[1]

He died some time after 1670 (the last known mention of Pieter de Jonge) and before the funeral of Jeremias van Rensselaer (director of Rensselaerwyck) on October 7/17, 1674, for which he was not on the invitation list. [1]

Two Pieter Loockermans were living in Beverwyck from the mid-1650s to the mid-1680s: an older one, Pieter Loockermans, a son of Jacob Lookermans and brother of Govert Loockermans, and their nephew Pieter, son of their brother Jan Lokerman. Identifying which records apply to which Pieter is a complex and on-going task. Please see this Free Space Page, "Pieter Loockermans - Disambiguation" for more analysis of the records identifying them.

Loockermans-29 and Loockermans-22 appear to represent the same person because:

The names match and both were married to a woman named Marietje (or variant thereof). I don't know of any other Pieter Janse/Jansz Loockermans in this time period. (The Loockermans-29 profile has no sources, so it's not easy to guess what the intent was, but this looks like a good bet.)
