John Owens was born in Wales.

John Owens was born about 1855 in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales. He is the son of Thomas Owens and Catherine (unknown) Owens (1861 Census).

In the England and Wales Census of 1861, John was age 4, living in the household of Margaret Price (age 70), single, head of family, his father Thomas Owens (age 31), a married Miner (listed as a boarder), and Catherine Owens (age 42), listed as Thomas's wife.

In the England and Wales Census of 1881 he is age 26, living in Aberdare, Glamorgan, Wales with his mother Catherine (age 69), a Widow, and his sister Mary Ann (age 24), single, a Brickmaker.
