Biography

Jane, daughter of Harry Wogan of Wiston[1] and Catrin ferch Dafydd Mathews,[2] was born in Wiston, Pembrokeshire in 1508.[3]

She married Richard Cornwell of Burford, Shropshire on 15 August 1523.[1][4] Richard was the son of Sir Thomas Cornwall of Burford[1] and Anne, daughter of Sir Richard Corbet.[5]

They had two sons and a daughter.[1]

She died on 10 August 1546 in Burford and is buried in St Mary's Churchyard there.[3]

Research Notes

This profile represents the daughter of "Harry" Wogan[2] who married Richard Cornwall:[1] "Jonet" in Bartrum's chart,[2] "Janet" in Find a Grave, and "Jane" in her husband's History of Parliament Online biography.[1]

The History of Parliament Online biography says that they had two sons and a daughter, but does not name them.[1] Bartrum does not appear to chart their descendants.[2] Her Find a Grave memorial, which says that they were married about 1536, names two sons and three daughters all "born/baptized in Burford, Shropshire":[3]

  • Thomas Cornwall baptized May 21, 1538[3]
  • Ann Cornwall born about 1540[3]
  • Elizabeth Cornwall born about 1542[3]
  • Edmund Cornwall born about 1544[3]
  • Mary Cornwall born about 1546[3]

Her entry in Genealogics lists her two sons by "Richard Cornewall, 9th feudal baron of Burford" (1493-1569), citing Burke's Peerage:[6]

  • Sir Richard Cornewall, of Berrington (b. est. 1535)
  • Thomas Cornewall, 11th feudal Baron of Burford (1538-1615)

It does not list any daughters.

Note that the History of Parliament Online does not support a line of "Barons of Burford", saying in her father-in-law's biography:

"The Cornwalls of Burford were the younger branch of an ancient family which traced its descent from an illegitimate son of Richard, Earl of Cornwall, brother of Henry III. It was possibly their sense of this distinguished ancestry which caused them to style themselves Barons of Burford, although none of their line had ever been summoned to Parliament."[5]

"He followd his forbears in styling himself Baron of Burford", says her husband's biographer at one point and, elsewhere: "It is as the 'Baron of Birport' that Cornwall appears on the list of those who voted against one of the government’s bills in this [1555] Parliament". Otherwise, the title is not mentioned.[1]

Warning -> Detached Profiles: Changing her birth years (from 1493 to 1508) triggered a warnings to check the data:

  • A child's birth date (Cornwall-112 born 1506) should not be before a parent is six years old (Wogan-43 born 1508).
  • A father's death date (Wogan-44 died 1483) should not be more than nine months before one of his children's birth dates (Wogan-43 born 1508).

The first bullet is about Margery (Cornwall) Stone (abt.1506-1568), which cites Geni as the source of her parents being Richard and Jane (Wogan) Cornwall. The entry in Geni for "Margaret Stone (Cornwall)" includes a note: "Not a child of Richard Cornwall, 9th Baron of Burford".[7] This warning will be resolved when Cornwall-112 is detached as their daughter.

The second bullet will be resolved when this profile is detached as daughter from profiles that are not her parents:
