Biography

Research Note

"On 8 March 1767 appeared Marguerite DUPUIS, Widow of Claude BABIN, living in Kerledant, Sauzon Parish, accompanied by Joseph BABIN, Louis COURTIN, Pierre DOUCET and Simon P. DAIGRE, all Acadians living on this island, witnesses, before whom she stated she was born at the Mines, St. Charles Parish, in 1702 of Martin DUPUIS (from France) and Perrinne THERIOT, both died at Port Royal. Marguerite DUPUIS married at the Mines, St. Charles Parish in 1718 to Claude BABIN, born same parish in 1698 of Charles and Magdelaine RICHARD of Port Royal." [1]

But....

DUPUIS, Michel, came from France, according to his granddaughter Marguerite Dupuis, widow of Claude Babin, who erroneously called him Martin Dupuis (Doc. inéd., Vol. III, p. 51). The widow also declared that her grandfather married Perrine Thériot, but various records in Acadia show that his wife was named Marie Gautrot [2]. Not surprisingly, Marguerite's son Laurent Babin's deposition contains the same information and misinformation as his mother's (ibid., pp. 131-132). Honoré Daigre, widower of Marguerite's grandniece Françoise-Osite Dupuis, meanwhile maintained that it was his late wife's grandfather Martin Dupuis, rather than her great-grandfather, who had come from France (ibid., Vol. II, p. 180). [3]

But, a Martin Dupuis is listed in 1703 & 1707 at Les Mines, he could not be born in 1612:

"Martin Dupuis, sa femme, 3 garçons, 2 filles." [4][5]

Martin Dupuis, father of Marguerite would have been married to Marie Landry:

Mariage, St-Charles-les-Mines, 14 Nov 1718
BABIN, CLAUDE & DUPUIT, MARGUERITE
BABIN, CHARLES, Père de l'époux & RICHARD, MAGDELEINE, Mère de l'époux
DUPUIT, MARTIN, Père de l'épouse, décédé & LANDRY, MARIE, Mère de l'épouse [6]

Then, if the Martin Dupuy of this profile really existed, (no source found to prove his existence) he could be the father of Michel Dupuy

Michel Dupuy, married to Marie Gautrot, father of Martin Dupuis
Martin Dupuis married to Marie Landry, father of Marguerite Dupuis
Marguerite Dupuis married to Claude Babin.

This profile would need some research - he is mixed up with a complicated branch concerning largely unsourced Huguenot emigrants, with a lot of duplicates (see his half-brother's profile) while being set up as the grandson of fanatic monk (Catholic, of course) Jacques Clément. If Clément produced any offspring I would like to see the documentation supporting it. (I'm aware this is a can of worms and awfully hard to research - please excuse me if this sounds blunt, it was not my intention).
