One day I was visiting my uncle and I asked him if he knew where his parents got married. I had always 'assumed' England and had been researching there - but boy was I wrong!
Nellie had accepted Harry's marriage proposal before he left England for Canada - after the 1901 census. When he wrote and asked her to come to Canada in 1907, she bought passage on a Salvation Army ship, landed in New York and took the train to the border crossing into Canada. They got married 22 Jun 1907 and THAT was at Snowflake Manitoba. Who knew??
I thought 'Why didn't I ask five years ago?" I guess I never really thought of Uncle Free as their son, I only thought of them as my grandparents who had died and I had never met.
