Deborah Marsh, daughter of William and Sarah Marsh, was born September 15, 1726 in West Marlborough, Chester County, Pennsylvania [1], where the family were members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
William Marsh, Deborah's father, died August 10, 1744. His will, proven October 1, 1744, provided for his wife, Sarah. To son William 150 acres of the south side of my plantation. To son Gravner 150 acres of land now in his possession. To son Henry 200 acres of land now in his possession. To sons James and John £20 each when of age. To 3 youngest daughters, viz Deborah, Susanna and Rachel Marsh £5 each. To daughters Mary, Sarah, Eleanor, Lydia and Elizabeth Marsh 5 shillings each. Executors: sons William and Gravner and son Henry, overseers. Witnesses: Daniel Ker, John Hetherinton [2].
Deborah married under the care of the Sadsbury Meeting to Jonathan Harlan 10th month 19 day 1745 (December 19, 1745). The marriage of Jonathan Harlan to Deborah Marsh, both members of Friends' Meetings, was a long process. The first declaration by the couple is recorded in three different Quaker monthly meeting documents, with the same date 7th of the 8th Mo 1745 or October 7, 1745, all at the Sadsbury Monthly Meeting. On the 26th of the 8th Mo 1745 (October 26, 1745), Jonathan requested that the New Garden Monthly Meeting issue a certificate to Sadsbury Monthly Meeting for marriage to Deborah. The New Garden meeting appointed two Friends to "make enquiry" and bring to next monthly meeting. Apparently, Jonathan was a member of the New Garden meeting and Deborah a member of Sadsbury meeting. The second intention of marriage was declared at Sadsbury on the 4th of the 9th Mo 1745 (November 4, 1745) and on the 2nd of the 10th Mo 1745 (December 2, 1745). The entry indicates that "nothing appears to be different so they are left to their liberty to consummate their marriage." Two male Friends were appointed to report on the accomplishment of the marriage and report back so a certificate can be recorded. No reason is known for two separate second intention declarations. In the New Garden Monthly Meeting of 30th of the 9th Mo 1745 (November 30, 1745), the certificate for Jonathan was prepared and approved. The marriage took place on the 19th of the 10th Mo 1745 (December 19, 1745) at the "Public Meeting House in Sadsbury". The marriage ceremony is described in the document cited below. Twenty-six witnesses attended including Mary Harlan, Elizabeth Harlan, Richard Marsh, Sarah Harlan, Greovner Marsh, William Harlan Jr and William Marsh. Jonathan and Deborah made their mark. At the Sadsbury Monthly Meeting the 6th of the 11th Mo 1745 (January 6, 1746), the Friends appointed to attend the marriage reported that they did attend, all was orderly and the marriage certificate was taken care of.[3][4]
