[2]1851 Census, Monk Hesildon, Durham, England
Jesse and Maryann Sage with daughter, Selina and son, William from Gravesyard, Staffordshire were Number 4 on George Robinson's list as passengers bound for Vancouver Island.
The barque Princess Royal slipped her moorings at 4 o'clock a.m. on 3 June 1854, under the direction of Captain David Wishart and mates Charles Gale and Mr Naunton, with John Meakin aboard! The steerage passengers came above deck to get their last glimpse of England. The ship, in charge of a pilot, was under tow until she reached the mouth of the Thames River. By next morning she was out of sight of land.
The Princess Royal arrived in Esquimalt Harbour in Victoria BC after a five month journey around the bottom of Patagonia in South America. A brother, George, was born in a storm off the coast of Patagonia. They were ferried from the ship by two smaller vessels, the Beaver and the Recovery, to Nanaimo, to arrive there on November 27th at 11 a.m.

DEATH TAKES ANOTHER FROM OUR MIDST
On Tuesday evening last at 5:30 the death occurred of Mrs. Edward Walker of this place. She had been ill for the past few weeks and during the last few days grew worse until the end came on Tuesday. The late Mrs. Walker was one of the pioneers of British Columbia, coming to Vancouver Island from Staffordshire, England, in the good ship Princess Royal in 1854. For a number of years she lived at Nanaimo and later to Cumberland to reside with her husband who died some four years ago. A grown up family of sons and daughters is left to mourn her loss. She was a sister to Mrs D G Dailey, and Messrs George and Enoch Sage of Nanaimo. The funeral took place on Thursday, and was largely attended by friends and relatives. The Pythian Sisters took charge of the funeral obsequies, of which order the decease lady was a member. The remains were interred in Cumberland cemetery.
There is no official census for British Columbia, Canada until 1881. Retrieved the funeral information from BC Archives newspaper microfilms.
