Note

John POGSON was a textile worker from Yorkshire. He was sentenced to death for burglary in County of York. John was tried at York Assizes on 15 July 1820 and his death sentence was commuted to transportation for life. He was transported to Australia on the "Prince of Orange" in 1821 on a life term leaving his wife Sarah and 2 young sons in Huddersfield, Yorkshire. Two years later they were sent for but Sarah had died and the boys stayed in England. One of them, Henry came to Australia in 1830.

John POGSON received a Conditional Pardon in 1841. By 1828 he had purchased 45 acres of Laurence Halfpenny's grant in the area of New Line and Gumnut Roads, and later bought further land along Gumnut Road and on Purchase Road.

During the 1830s Wesleyan prayer meetings were held in the homes of settlers in Castle Hill and John Pogson is named as one of those.

In 1837 he was on a ticket-of-leave and by 1841 he was granted a conditional pardon.

In 1845 John and Mary Ann (nee HOWARTH) deeded, for the consideration of 10 shillings, half an acre of land opposite their home for the building of the Wesleyan Church and burial ground.

The church recently celebrated its 125 year anniversary. See the photo of an item in the Hornsby Advocate, 6 March 2014, p9

He passed away about 1867.
