He was the first-born son and heir of François Gruson and his wife, Antoinette Catherine (Rogeau) Gruson. The family were Walloon French Huguenots (Protestant Christians) and lived in the Province d'Artois, France, on what was then the border of the Spanish-Hapsburg-ruled Low Countries (Netherlands).

First he married Barbe Dumetz (aka "Dumez") about 1592. They had

Jean de Gruson then married Noëlle Carlier, b: ca. 1680. They had a son: Mathieu Gruson, b: ca. 1611.
Jean de Gruson was a landowner for he was called a "Censier," (land-tax payer) and later, despite his Calvinist beliefs and background, he was elected as an "échevin" (justice of the peace / local magistrate) for Fleurbaix. He had his popular election overturned by the local Roman Catholic authorities despite having the backing of the local Catholic priest. [1]
