Biography

A draft of my autobiography is at https://wiederhold.org/Stories/GioWiederhold1936.pdf. My vitae is at http://infolab.stanford.edu/people/gio.html

Sources

My main source is the 12-volume Wiederhold family History compiled by Alfred Wiederhold from 1932 to 1987. All of the pages have been scanned in and are available as Adobe pdf files. They are all now available at https://wiederhold.org/SourceInfo.html A copy of the tree I created from them is in a Webtree file at https://wiederhold.org/index.php?ctype=gedcom&ged=tree1. I was also able to obtain a number of additional records. It is periodically updated - about once a years, as I validate, add, and extend ancestor entries. I hope to have an update soon (August 2022) covering all entries prior to 1860 (the US civil war) covering the major emigration from Germany.

Because Alfred's books were handtyped and marked, automatic searches may fail. All the text is in German. Sections are individually numbered, and then there are fold-out charts. Vols VII to X are mainly charts I. 55 Years of Wiederhold Family Research, 1987. 25 pages II. Stammfolgen aus Felsberg, Volume 1, 1980. Abt 260 page III. Stammfolgen aus Felsberg, Volume 2, 1980. Abt. 180 pages IV. Stammfolgen aus Homberg, Volume 1, 1981. Abt. 212 pages V. Stammfolgen aus Homberg, Volume 2, 1982. Abt. 187 pages VI. Stammfolgen aus Homberg, Volume 3, 1983. Abt.195 pages VII. Stammtafeln Wiederhold aus Verschiedenen Orten, Volume 1, 1984. VIII. Stammtafeln Wiederhold aus Verschiedenen Orten, Volume 2, 1984. IX. Stammtafeln Wiederhold aus Verschiedenen Orten, Volume 3, 1989. X. Stammtafeln Wiederhold aus Verschiedenen Orten, Volume 4, 1989. XI. Wiederhold, Einzelvorkommen, 1985. 114 pages . Historical documents XII. Wiederhold, Siegel und Wappen, no date, 24 pages of Coats of arms. More details are at http://infolab.stanford.edu/pub/gio/personal/ancestors/index.html. A also have DVDs covering the 185 Volumes of the Deutsch Geschlewchter Buecher, and paper copies of some early churchbooks and the Warburger Stanmtafeln.

For ancestors from the Netherlands East Indies (families von Wiederhold and Tuybens) I use mainly the 2 -DVD set RegeringsAlmanak 1815-1900, and RegeringsAlmanak 1901-1942, issued by the Centraal Bureau voor genealogie, Royal Library, The Hague, the Netherlands. Other Dutch ancestors I have located on visits to the Royal Library, and the records of the Vereenigde Oost-Indische Companie (VOC) there..

For records if Swiss ancestors (family Droz) I have used mainly Alfred Chapuis: Histoire de la Pendulerie Neuchateloise; Editions Attinger, first edition 1917, and references from that book and its successors.

Hi Gio, 😊

I’m always so excited to bump into another member researching their South African Roots!

Perhaps you would like to join the South African Roots Project? Besides links to sources, there are help pages that might also be useful. Many / most of the South African genealogical lines and profiles of the eighteenth and seventeenth periods (and earlier) have already been made. Many have also been validated with primary sources.

A few handy links:

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, let me know, I'd like to help in any way that I can.

Happy tree climbing

Pam,

I think I can join, but won't be very active, since only a few branches in my large Wiederhold tree (https://wiederhold.org/) intersect with South Africa. Will try to enter some validated inks to make the connection. Knowing English, Dutch, and German does help identify duplicates, btw. I do use small `van', by the way, whenever rational, sometimes frustrating my wife and neighbors, since we live at 601 van Ness Avenue in San Francisco. I noticed may entries in Wikitree are shown as before day-month-year. I assume the dates are baptismal dates. I indicate that as a note in my entries. One of collaborators, Alwin Wiederhold, now in the UK, comes from the South-African branch . A story by him is at https://wiederhold.org/Stories/WiederholdConfusion.pdf Enjoy. Gio

Hi Gio,

No worries at all, you can be as active or not as you need, it's a great way to keep updated on what's happening within the project and posts in G2G that might be relevant to your research. I can just imagine how having knowledge of English, Dutch, and German is a huge help! I wish I could speak and read German and Dutch. I had noticed that you've got a large amount of genealogical experience, thank you for all your contributions everywhere - it's a real treasure for so many of us researching our branches. Yes, those are baptism dates, sometimes we're lucky enough to find birthdates on the baptisms, but often not.

Thanks for the link to the article hahahaha...I completely understand! When I was a kid people would spell my surname as Cormack, and even sometimes McCormack...then I married a Smith. I'm assuming it's your book to which he refers, it's amazing who I get to meet in this field 😊

Hello, Gio!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Kind regards,

Pippin Sheppard – WikiTree Greeter

Hi Gio!

Some time ago, you have expressed your interest in Project Belgium. The project has recently been promoted from a free-space project to a more official project (actually a sub-project of Europe)! You can find the (revamped) project page here.

That means among other things that you can now receive a project badge (of the Europe Project) indicating your involvement, that we can more easily create stickers, that we will be able to discuss and "officially" establish guidelines and standards relating to Belgian profiles, and that we will have a project account for important Belgian profiles.

If you're still interested, could you (re)confirm your interest to become a member of Project Belgium by answering this g2g post? I will then make sure you receive the (Europe) badge!

Best regards,

Filip

Thank you for your decision to contribute. WikiTreers have all sorts of skills, but one common interest - genealogy. I would recommend first looking around and become familiar with the various functions.

The main menu, located at the top right of the page, offers access to the most important features amongst them your Wiki-ID. In the help section »G2G« at the bottom, you’ll find the WikiTree online help. You can ask all sorts of questions, technical and others, and because WikiTree is worldwide, there is almost always someone online, who can give a qualified answer. Good luck! - And don't forget to sign the Honor Code. Pleasure to have you onboard.

Hi, Gio. After reviewing the linked material, it looks like you have very interesting information that we'd love to have on our global tree.

Are you wanting to replace a tree already on our site? You could add to a tree, but it can't be replaced with another one. That would erase documentation, sources, biographies, and connections other people have added.

Our guidelines say:

"Additional GEDCOM imports will not automatically replace profiles created through previous imports. Duplicates need to be skipped during the GEDMatches process."

I hope I've understood your question. If not, please correct me, and I hope you will join our global family. :)

I posted my question as

Can I replace an entire submitted tree? That will determine if a can share my large tree (now 4780) on Wikitree. I put a pointer to information about it the message http://i.stanford.edu/pub/gio/personal/ancestors/index.html Thanks Gio
