Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Henry Soane was a Virginia colonist.
Henry was a Friend (Quaker)

Henry was married to Rebecca Hubbard and had three children with her:

  • John
  • Nancy
  • Susanah.

Henry's marriage to Rebecca is confirmed in a Dower Assignment dated 1753[1] and his children are confirmed in the Appraisal filed in his estate. [2] In the Inventory and Appraisement he is referred to as Captain Henry Soane.

The Dower Assignment to Rebecca included:

  • 550 acres of land in the Parish of Westover and County of Charles City, including the Mannor Plantation and Mill with its appertenances and cleared ground thereunto belonging.
  • 285 acres of land in the County of Lunenburg including the Plantation belonging to the estate.
  • Slaves:
    • John
    • Scott
    • Will
    • James
    • Peter
    • Jacob
    • Scott
    • Glasgow
    • Sarah
    • Judith

The Inventory and Appraisement in the estate of Captain Henry Soane in Charles City County was made 28 Feb 1750 and an Inventory and Appraisement for his estate in Lunenburg County was made 02 Mar 1750. Littleberry Cocke was appointed Administrator of Henry's estate.

Littleberry requested reimbursements from the estate of Henry beginning in 1751 for expenses of the children of Henry and Rebecca. In 1754 Littleberry claimed a reimbursement regarding Susanah, "To cash paid James Williams for making her coffin and finding plank." This expense indicates that Susanah died in the year 1754. In the same year there were also expenses claimed under Susanah included "laying of wench" Sue and Tabb.

A Judgment filed in the Charles City County Court Aug 1754 was styled Elizabeth Ballard administratrix of Thomas Ballard deceased against Littleberry Locke and Rebecca Hubbard his wife Administratrix of Henry Soane Deceased. By this year Rebecca had married Littleberry Cocke.

In 1769 a Deed was made by Littleberry Cocke to Rebecca Cocke, his daughter. [3] In this deed Rebecca's Cocke's mother, Rebecca Hubbard the wife of Littleberry Cocke, relinquished her right of dower in the Mill Pond Plantation at Soane's bridge and the property was conveyed to Rebecca Cocke allowing use for life by Littleberry and Rebecca. The conveyance also included the following slaves:

  • Bett
  • Patt
  • Rachel
  • Tom
  • Zaga
  • Will

I came across an Inventory for the Estate of Captain Henry Soane filed in Charles City County. The date shown is 1755. There is also another document laying off the dower of Rebecca Hubbard Soane, his wife from 1753. It is possible the names of some children could be picked out of the inventory because debts included a charge for a midwife for the boy Will. It can be seen https://www.virginiamemory.com/collections/ under County & City Records, Lost Records. If this is the correct Henry Soane I will get review the documents closer.

Hi! I just ran across the same records. Pretty sure they are for this Henry & his wife Rebecca.

After I made this comment the profile manager removed himself and I adopted the profile. I think I have added the information from those records to the profile.

There are a couple of things on this profile I thought were odd. I have several times wondered if there is another Henry Soane?

Administration of his estate was in 1750 and he was born in 1644, making him over 100 years old.

His children with Rebecca were obviously under age when he died. He would have had to be in his 80s when they were born. Rebecca remarried Littleberry Cocke who was administrator of Henry's estate. Littleberry made claims against the estate for expenses of the children. Rebecca would have most likely been much younger than Henry because after she married Littleberry Cocke she appears to have had another daughter with him. A deed was made to the daughter in 1769 and Rebecca's dower was released.

I have come back several times to look at this profile and the sources. I have wondered if the Henry Soane in these records should actually be a grandson to Henry Soane, Jr. and a son to this Henry Soane?

it's a bit of a tangle, with several Henry Soanes, more than one Judith Soane (whether married name or maiden), and marriages to Petersons and Thweatts who get confused & conflated. At one point I thought I had the Judiths straight, but I haven't checked on them for a while - see the note at the top of Soane-14, for example.

And... I'd lost track of my example of colonial Virginia records assigning Jr/Sr to women of the same name. It's mother/daughter Judiths, the aunt (Soane-13) and grandmother (Fuller-670) of the Judith I just mentioned (Soane-14). From the profile for the niece (although it should probably be on the aunt's profile):

On 24 November 1651 HENRY SOANE patented 297 acres, James City County (Patent Book 2, p 351) lyeing on the E side of the Chicohominy River, comonly know & called Hoggs Land; Transport 6 persons: HENRY SOANE, SR., HENRY SOANE, JR., JUDETH SOANE Senr., JUDETH SOANE Junr., JOHN SOANE, ELIZABETH SOANE.
