Per Memorial: "The Mohun family was one of the most ancient Norman houses of the West Country, and derived its name from Moyon in Normandy. The founder of the family in England, William de Mohun, appears in Domesday as an important tenant in chief in the counties of Somerset and Dorset. The caput of their barony ws Dunster Castle, in Somerset, and their history has been fully set forth by Sir Henry Churchill Maxwell-Lyte in his history of 'Dunster and its Lords.' The Moones of Fleet, Co. Dorset (for the name Mohun [Moyon] became corrupted in Moone [Moon]) were a cadet branch, who claimed to descend from Sir Robert Mohun of Lorlock, Co. Somerset, the fifth son of Sir John de Mohun of Dunster, who died in 1330. But the descent is obscure, and the ancestry of this branch has not been proved farther back than Richard Mohun alias Moone with whom the following pedigree begins."
"He was also said to have "died, an old man, about 1570, and was buried in Bridport church. The name of his wife, who also was buried in Bridport church, is unknown. He was of Hawkchurch, Co. Dorset, in the early part of the reign of Henry VIII, and held land also in Axminster, Co. Devon, in 1529. He removed to Bridport at that time, and was granted land there 12 Sept. 1529. He was Bailiff of Bridport in 1527 and 1528 Henry VIII [1535-1537] (Hutchins's History of Dorset) and also in 1544-45." 1440
(1440)***
(1442) "Richard died in 1546 (The Register, vol. 80, pp. 355-356) and not 'about 1570' as stated in The Register, vol. 81, p. 314. It was pointed out that the Mohuns of Fleet, near Bridport, Co. Dorset, were undoubtedly descended from some obscure cadet branch of the ancient Norman house of Mohun of Dunster Castle, Co. Somerset, which emerged once more into prominence in the social upheaval which took place in the reign of Henry VIII, but no attempt was made to discuss the ancestry of Richard Moon of Hawkchurch and Bridport. The present paper will deal with the probably ancestry of Richard and a tentative pedigree will be presented, which while not proven cannot, in any event, be very far out of the way." Details to be entered. 1443
(1443) "Richard Mohun alias Moone - b.a. 1485, d. a. 1547, bur. Bridport Church. Married Joan (___) Howman of Bridport, Dorset.
