Biography

William was a Friend (Quaker)

William HOUGH (12 Aug 1805 Surry Co, NC - 2 Feb 1876 Wayne Co, IN, bur Newport). William came with his parents to New Garden Twp., Wayne Co., IN as Quakers from Yadkin (Surry) Co., NC. He was the son of Jonathan Hough and Gulielma Hutchins.

On 27 Jul 1826 at New Garden MM in Wayne Co, IN, he md Keziah HOUGH/HUFF (27 Apr 1804 NC - 3 Jul 1862), dau of Jesse and Elizabeth (BURNSIDE) HUFF and granddaughter of Daniel and Elizabeth (Christie) HUFF. William was also related by marriage to this HUFF family as his brother, Israel HOUGH md Martha, a daughter of Daniel and (Christie). Their marriage record shows signatures of both families, a thirty year association of three generations from PA through VA and into NC to IN.

Children:

1. Daniel (11 June 1827 IN - 15 June 1880) md Theofana HOPKINS (1833 - 1922), and ch were:

2. Lydia (4 Jan 1829 IN - 1901, bur Willow Grove Cem, Wayne Co, IN) md Elias BALDWIN.

3. Jane (27 Aug 1831 IN - ) md Lee HARRIS, according to Quaker Records.

4. Emily (1 Sep 1834 IN - ) md ??? PITTS.

5. Mary (5 Jan 1838 IN - ) md Joseph GODDARD.

6. Elizabeth (8 Nov 1842 IN - ) md Ashley JOHNSON.

The marriage record [1] of Israel Hough and Martha HUFF lists these related families to the Houghs and Huffs who also migrated to Indiana:

The HOUGH witnesses were William. Hough, Mary (Smith) Hough, Jonathan and Ira Hough, Mary Hough, Jr. Charlotte Hough an aunt of Israel who md Wm. Bond and their dau Mary Bond. Jno. Huff was shown but scratched out and changed to Hough.

The HUFF cousins included: Daniel Huff, Senr. Daniel Huff, Jr., Jefse Huff, Wm. Bond and wife Charlotte, Mary Bond, Anne Huff, and Hezikiah Huff, the last an unknown.

In 1837, Daniel HUFF (md Emily Nixon), son of John and Mary (Burnside HUFF), boarded at William’s farm where he was taught the skill of wagon-making at which he excelled. The two families lived within a couple of miles of each other according to land records, William and young Daniel remained close until death as did Daniel to William's son Daniel.

William was a wagon maker and blacksmith and in 1852 he built a water driven saw mill, still in operation in 1872. This closeness between the two supports their PA-NC connection.

In the 1830s, temperance took hold and William was a strong Quaker supporter of the movement. Temperance allowed the community to remain liquor free for at least forty years. William, along with his father Jonathan was disowned in 1844 for opposing the advice of the Society and setting up a separate meeting contrary to the discipline of New Garden MM. This new meeting related to the anti-slavery positions within the church.

Jonathan was one of the early pioneers in the settlement of New Garden twp and William and his brothers, Hiram, Levi and Moses, were all active in the anti-slavery cause. Jonathan lived with Moses’ family in 1850 and fugitives were repeatedly cared for in their house. Brother Israel Hough lived just north of William and also participated in the abolitionist movement. Israel's property was part of the established new community of Newport, expanded from New Garden.

Then, in 1858, Joel PARKER, Hiram HOUGH and Daniel HUFF (Keziah’s brother; md Katherine Shugart] bought the anti-slavery Friends’ house, hired exceptional teachers and continued the school for several years. Note, next, that 1858 was also pivotal year for William’s HOUGH side of the family.

In 1858, William and his father Jonathan Hough requested reinstatement to the New Garden MM. Note ministers Mariam H. Hough, daughter-in-law, remained esteemed member as did her husband Zeri. After a decade and a half, apparently, adjustments to discipline and political conflicts became less heated between the Quaker groups and desires of reconciliation became of personal importance and the Friend's reunited.

After Keziah died, William md (2) Eliza CLINGMAN in 1869, the certificate dated 17 Apr. They were living in Green’s Fork Community just west of Fountain City in 1870.

Keziah and William are both bur at Willow Grove Cemetery, Fountain City as are his parents and other family members. Eliza’s burial place is not known.
