Mary (Smith) Hough's name and marriage is confirmed in Buckingham Monthly Meeting records [1] Her husband was not Quaker at the time so she had been disowned for marrying out of unity.
They eventually removed to Wilkes and Surry Cos., NC with other "Friends" and endeavored to be reinstated. William is recorded first as being "under the care of the preparative meeting" many years later [2] when his acceptance is recorded.
The next year Mary was required to submit a request from Buckingham MM in Bucks Co., to in order to "recover her right of membership." [3].
They renewed their faith in services performed for the meeting and in 1785 made separate requests for their children's admissions, which were granted. [4]
Both William and Mary were active in the Society and their children were all born in NC (except the one unknown child born in PA when they married.) They initially served in Deep River MM and later helped to establish Deep Creek MM.
It isn't certain when they removed to Wayne Co., IN but in 1814 a record acknowledges their move and status within the communities in both NC and IN.
"To Friends of White Water Monthly Meeting Indiany (sic) Territory the occasion of our Writing to you at this time is on account of William and Mary Hough And their grandson John Hough Who Requested our certificate to your meeting these are therefore to Inform you that they are Members of our Society and of Order Deportment this being what we think needful On the occasion We remain your Brethren and sisters given forth at Deep Creek monthly Meeting held the second of the 4th month in Surry Co., North Carolina 18145. Signed by order of the above said meeting By: Wm. Dobbins, Clk., Sarah Dobbins Clk. at this time." [5]
They continued in New Garden MM, Fountain City, Wayne Co., IN to serve until their deaths and they are buried at New Garden Cemetery there.
Note: the grandson John (born 1801) was brought to IN well after the initial move there as it is also recorded in Deep Creek MM Yadkin Co., NC that this child was orphaned as an infant and William himself requested the child be "taken under the care of Friends which this meeting grants." [6]
