Gilbert White was a famous naturalist, who wrote 'The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne' (1789) and other works, the full texts of which are available on the Internet. In 1763 he inherited 'The Wakes' at Selborne from his uncle Rev, Charles White, who had married his father's sister Elizabeth (1698-1753). Charles White died in March 1763, and is buried at Selborne. See also the website: naturalhistoryofselborne.com which gives the full text of White's notebooks for the period 1768-1793. Much of the biographical information regarding Gilbert White's family comes from a two-volume work entitled 'The Life and Letters of Gilbert White of Selborne' by Rashleigh Holt-White (with hyphen), born 1850. He is the grandson of GW's brother Thomas. The full text of at least one of the volumes is available on the Internet. Altogether, Gilbert White had six brothers and four sisters, but one brother and two sisters died young.
