Bart Kelly was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales
Transported to Australia on board the 'Jane' that arrived in NSW in 1831 with 133 Irish convicts and was sent to Norfolk Island. The Peter Mayberry record suggests the convict indent lists his age as 17 in 1831, but his headstone suggests he may have been born in 1816 and was only 15 at the time he was transported. He was tried at Cork and his sentence was 7 years transportation for stealing a cow. His occupation at the time of the crime is listed as a spadesman reaper and he was a single man.
Bart, along with five others, died from a gun shot wound on board the government brig Phillip, being part of the ship's crew that attempted to take over the ship. He had only been part of the ships crew for 2 days. He is described as being of superior strength and desperate resoluteness.
His headstone indicates he was born in Kilmurry, Cork, and he is buried on Norfolk Island.
