"Pieter Stryker was commissioned High Sheriff of King's County, Long Island in 1683, Captain of the Foot Militia in 1689 and Judge of the Court from 1720-1722. His house was of stately Holland brick, with his initials and the date of its construction, "P S - 1696" built into the front of the structure over the doorway in red and blue bricks. His will, dated April 23, 1729 and proved March 27, 1742, left his personal estate to his seven children and the provision "to my wife . . . the use of the Great southern room in my dwelling house in Flatbush, with liberty to pass through the house to the well to fetch water, or any other business, and she is to be maintained with all necessaries." To his son, John, he willed the family " silver hilted sword". From "Banta Pioneers
