Biography

Ruth was a Friend (Quaker)

Ruth was born on 5d 5m 1738 [5 Jul 1738] in Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1] She was the daughter of William Russell and Elizabeth (Smith) Russell.[1]

She married Daniel Sheppard, son of Daniel (deceased) and Sarah Shepherd of Oblong, on 11d 10m 1758 [11 Oct 1758] in Oblong, Dutchess, New York.[2]

She died about 13 Jan 1813 in Saratoga, New York.

Notes

  • Quaker Calendar - There has been much confusion over the dates in Quaker records. Friends used numbered months and days rather than what they considered pagan names for them (i.e. "Thursday" coming from "Thor's Day"). Thus, when the secular calendar was changed in 1752, making January the first month instead of March, Friends began calling January "First Month".
