Biography

Abstract of Will

Will Abstract of Constantine Wood, yeoman of Woodbury, Gloucester County. He had written his will 19 March 1735, naming his wife Alice. His real estate was settled on his sons. To "William (the eldest) home plantation; John, land fronting on Mantos Creek, bounded on lower side by land belonging to Ward and on upper side by land of William Chester; Constantine, land fronting on Mantos Creek, between land of John Chester and that of Samuel Chester; Francis, land fronting on Delaware River, between Richard Bickham's and William Arrel's, extending to Treadway's land." He left L10 to daughter Abigail Chew, and L15 to daughter Loetitia. The Executors were named as "wife, Alice, and son, William Wood." Witnesses were William Wilkins, Richard Floyd, and Richard Bradford.

•The inventory of Constantine Wood was appraised by William Wilkins and Richard Bickham, at Woodbury, on 16 June 1736. The value of the estate was £388. 8s. 5d,[1]and included "debts due from Daniel Gant, Thomas Lucy, Thomas Wilkins, Dav. Bristo, John Clifton, John Ladd, Edward Wilson, Richard Chew, Martin Bickham.

  1. {Note on British currency:- £1 = one pound sterling, 1s = one shilling, 20s. = £1, 1d. = one old penny, 240d. = £1, 12d. = Is. There are now 100 new pence to the pound. Originally it is believed King Penda who died 15 November 655, had a pound of silver cut into 240 equal 'Penda-weights' which became known as silver pennies. Silver coins were still being minted in the early 20th century and were still in circulation in the 1950s although the banks had been extracting them from circulation since WWI. The £ symbol is a capital L for the Latin word libra , scales; the s. for shilling was originally linked to the Roman solidus coin and the d. for our penny was from the Roman silver denarius coin}
