John Power

I have at least 3 John Power's in my Ancestry tree, I am filling in a wikitree, tree also but only regards the Power part of my family. I am John Richard Power, my father was John Robert Power and his father, my grandfather, was John Power. My Ancestry tree is Power/Pickering, I am trying to find my Grandparents and any other relatives, via Ancestry and other means such as wikitree. My grandparents lived in or around Alton, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom. They were John Power and Martha Power (nee Brown). My father John Robert Power was born in Alton 18th November 1926 at 7, Tower Street, Alton, Hampshire, England. He unfortunately passed away in 2007, he tried on several occasions to find his parents (John and Martha) without success. As a minor he was left with a family headed by Edwin George Bann (Senior) who lived at Snode Cottages, Snode Hill, Medstead, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom which is a stones throw from Alton. His biological parents John and Martha were allegedly "in service" and so could have been employed by a prominent person or establishment as my Grandfather's profession was stated on my fathers birth certificate as a Butler. Edwin George Bann (Junior) worked as a gardener for Lady Elsie Bradford at Medstead Manor. Most if not all of the Bann family generations of the time are now deceased so my efforts to find my Grandparents are a little blind as I have no point of reference to begin a search. Although clearly my Grandparents were in or around Alton when my father was born I do not know where they lived or indeed where they went unless they lived at 7, Tower Street, Alton, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom which is the address given on my fathers birth certificate. I can see from records that the Bann family lived at Snode cottages for some years which is where they must have met my Grandparents John and Martha. Allegedly my Grandparents John and Martha had several children that did not live with them (probably due to them being in service) that they collected together wherever they lived in or around Alton and left the area as a family only leaving behind my father in the care of the Bann family. The Bann family eventually moved to Carshalton Surrey probably around 1930, taking my father John Robert Power with them. My father passed away without ever knowing his parents and it was something that troubled him all of his life as he did not know why they would leave him behind. He did not hold any resentment but would have been overjoyed to find them. On his passing I promised myself that I would do my upmost to find them if I could. After all they are also my Grandparents. I have recently discovered Stanley Power my father's (John Robert Power) brother through a DNA match of his grandson who lives in Canada and am now in touch with the rest of Stanley's family. Stanley was also left with a family in Denbigh, Wales, United Kingdom. Stanley was born in 1921. If you recognise any family similarities or names of his parents John and Martha or relatives it would be most appreciated if you could contact me. My details are as follows. John Richard Power email: [email address removed] Mob: 0044 (0)7970787507.

Thank you Rae! Yes, it's a minefield trying to research the surname POWER in Waterford :-) My maternal side has 2 Power branches and I hope there's not a third lurking in the background!

As for 'neighbourhood/streets'...one branch lived around Mayor's Walk/Barrack Street;the other branch lived in Wilken Street/Passage Road. Both branches hail from outside Waterford city... Butlerstown, Carrick on Suir, possibly Tramore. Impossible to connect as there's a plethora of James', Catherines and Mary :-) Plus, the paper trail in Ireland is very thin as many will know. Thank you and Regards!

I see you have Power's from Waterford in your linage, we may be related down the line, I am pretty confident my Power's are from Waterford, very large family here in Newfoundland, most seem to be connected to!

It looks like Deborah has you all squared away!! That was fast. :-) (Thanks, Deborah!)

Also, I wanted to give you a tip on your tags. If you separate out the name variations, you will be able to click on each of them to see other Wikitree genealogists who are also interested in those surnames. It's a great way to find people to collaborate with.

Oh, and you can also have tags for the locations you mentioned. Now that you're a confirmed member, you can have a total of 20 Tags, so go crazy! :-)

Have a great time looking around and be sure to let us know if you need any help!
