Andrew was born in 1518. He passed away in 1583.
He was the son of Robert Haig and Barbara Spottiswood. Andrew married three times, the first being in 1543. Married Susan Renton, Janet Nisbet, Elizabeth McDougal.
Andrew was known for the restoration of Bemersyde Towering Roxbugshire, Scotland after its destruction by the earl of Hartford in 1545.
No proof as to who he married and there was more than one place called Nisbet so Nisbet of Nisbet is not necessarily Nisbet of that Ilk
Mylne states that Andrew Haig married—[1]
The two last are certainly inaccurate. In Carr's History of Coldingham Priory (p. 147), it is stated that in 1543, Andrew Haig of Bemersyde married Susan, daughter of David Renton of Billie, Berwickshire, a descendant of the ancient foresters of Coldingham. From the date here given, this was most probably Haig's first marriage, not his second, as Mylne has it.
He had two children, Robert Haig, Andrew Haig
Douglas also differs from Mylne in giving as the name of the third wife, Elizabeth, daughter of M'Dougall of Makerstoun, and in this Douglas is no doubt accurate (see ante, p. 112).
The Haig’s of Bemersyde pp111-112 states his third wife, Elizabeth M’Dougall is undoubted from the circumstances that her initials and family arms appear along with his on a stone which still exists at Bemersyde. The stone which is now built into an archway adjoining the house bears the initials AH and EM with the arms of the Haigs and the M’Dougalls.
