Biography

Arnout VIELE. He lived in Albany, New York. For many years he was the provincial interpreter for the Mowhawk Indians, and attended their yearly gathering at Albany. He often visited them in the western wilderness. On account of their high esteem for him, and in recognition of his valuable services, in 1683 they gave him a parcel of land, called "Wachkeerhoha", located above Schenectady on the north side of the river. In 1687 he was taken prisoner by the French as he was on his way to Ottawa to trade. Espousing the cause of Leisler in opposition to Col. Ingoldsby, he was turned out of his office of interpretor, after which he retired to Long Island; but being held "in great esteem by the Indians" and being "a good and faithful interpreter" he was soon recalled to the office of Indian Interpreter. CORNELIS VOLKERTSZEN VIELE sailed for New Netherland on the ship "de Eendracht" which left Holland in May 1634. He returned on the same ship, which reached Amsterdam before 3 Dec 1635, having worked his way over on the boat. [4] Cornelis was a seaman, sail maker and tavern keeper.

Name

The younger children of Cornelis Volckertszen Viele were all baptized without a surname and Aernout signed his own name as "Aernout Cornlissen" in the court of Fort Orange. [5] It is therefore assumed that Aernout took his surname later in life.

In 1704, Pieter Lansing and Arnout Viele filed an application for a patent of land, near Albany, NY, previously given to Arnout, which, in turn, he turned over to Pieter Lansing.

Arnout died sometime after 1704, most likely in New York, according to concensus of researchers. No specific location has been identified, although it is suspected that the death occurred at/near New York City. He was over 64 years of age. Quick-803 23:00, 14 February 2014 (EST).
