Biography

Willem de La Montagne was baptised on Apr 22, 1641, at New Amsterdam, New Netherland. Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam.[1] [2][3][4] His parents were Jan|Jean|Johannes de la Montagne[5] and Rachel, daughter of Jesse DeForest [6]

"William Montanye, he styled himself De La Montagne, joined the church at New Amsterdam October 2, 1661 when he came to Harlem. Called to be voorleser at Esopus, he held that office till 1678; from 1668 adding the duties of secretary. He married May 19, 1673, Elenora, daughter of Anthony De Hooges [7] , and that year drew 300 guilders from the Orphan Chamber at Leyden (whence derived is left to conjecture); to obtain which he chose as guardians his cousins Panhuysen and Du Toict, the sons-in-law of Gerard De Forest. Leisler made him high sheriff of Ulster County, December 24, 1689. He had removed to Mombackus, town of Rochester, and was living 1695. His children were Rachel, born 1674, who married Harman Decker; Johanna 1676, living 1699; William 1678; Maria 1680, married Nicholas Westfall; Johannes 1682; Jesse 1684; Eve 1686, married Derick Krom, and Catharine 1688, who married John Bevier. Ulster County records are strangely silent as to William's sons ."[8]

He was the Kingston court secretary.

Death

1691 Orange, New York, USA[20]
1695 Mombaccus, New York, USA[21]
Mombaccus was the Dutch name for the area that became the Town of Rochester. It was first settled in 1672. The name Rochester began with the issuance of a land patent in 1703. It became a Town in 1788 and the formal establishment of the Town of Rochester occurred in 1803.
Note: The English organized counties in the Province of New York in 1683; the area of the present-day Schenectady County was included in Albany County. Albany County contained an enormous area, including the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory, extending westward to the Pacific Ocean. This county was reduced in size on July 3, 1766, by the creation of Cumberland County, and further on March 16, 1770, by the creation of Gloucester County, both containing territory now within the state of Vermont.

The singlings are using the correct spelling.
I agree Tom. It should not be dropped. One of the profiles merged was imported correctly but was merged away. Let's look for a duplicate with the correct spelling before we change it.
William was baptized William de La Montagne and baptized children as de La Montagne...Why drop the de La Montagne?

Montagne-7 and De La Montagne-37 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles represent the same person and need to be merged. de la Montagne is the best LNAB choice. this will eliminate yet another duplication in the de la Montagne line.

thanks, Tom Quick
