Probate: BROWN Josiah of 85 Park-Road Westhoughton Lancashire died 29 November 1912 Probate London 24 April to Peter Scholes master confectioner and Elizabeth Brown widow. Effects £276 17s. 10d.

Ethel Brown said little about her father. However, he was very ambitious, wanting something better for his children. He worked very hard, and this drove him to an early grave, at about age 48. He worked in a coal mine, living in Westhoughton, and walked to Bolton in the evenings to attend clases, walking home again (about 5 miles each way.).

He obtained his Under-Manager's Certificate, and became a Colliery Foreman (Below ground). Ethel said that he said of his son William Brown, "This man's not goin' int' th' pit!", and managed to get him a job where he later became a tailer. The other boys had to work in the coal mine, from very young age, and the girls had to work in the cotton mill.

Josiah was very strict with his sons. Ethel can remember two of her brothers chased upstairs with a whip.
